Carpet got wet, super smelly, how to de-odorize QUICKLY?

My old roomate unplugged his fridge for a day and the carpet around it got all wet, and now it smells like a zoo, and my new roomate is moving in tomorrow night.

I sprayed some Febreeze on it, but I don't know if that'll be enough. THe carpet's still moist and stinks. What's the best and quickest way to get rid of the odor? I can't get one of those carpet shampooers, I need a cheap or do it yourself solution please, thanks.

baking soda....that or go buy a box of 20 Mule Team Borax. Should be able to find the Borax at a Wal-Mart or grocery store in the laundry detergent section. Costs about $3

Point any sort of fans that you an in that room towards the carpet, and open the windows if at all possible. But yeah, Baking Soda or any Carpet Deodorizer (sp), and after all that is done, then use Febreeze. The Carpet stuff can be found at almost any store, and you might try looking in the pet aisles.

Can't use baking soda, the carpet is still wet. If i use powder it'll crust up and leave white spots when it dries. Hopefully the febreeze works, cause it was a very strong smell.

Damn I should have taken the hair dryer when my roomate was throwing out stuff he didn't need while he was moving.

Let the carpet dry fully (Or as much as possible) before applying the Febreeze.

Lysol. It kills mildew and such.

Edit: Also, a shop vac will suck the water up real quick if you can find someone that has one...

Get the Borax....trust me....that stuff works on anything....from their page...

instead of trying to "MASK" it .. shouldnt you try to remove the source?? I would recommand borrowing a steam vaccum and using it ...

How about renting a carpet shampooer? I know Home Depot and places like that will rent them for a decent price. Just shampoo the carpets and point some fans at it to dry things up quickly. Frebreeze as necessary.

get it dry. any way you can. put some towels on top and stand on 'em, soak up as much as you can so the air can finish the job. getting it dry will do as much to solve the problem as anything else. go with the borax and/or baking soda anyway, as long as you have access to a vacuum for when it is dry.. they'll work better wet.
