Was using and programming CNC in the early 80's and many of those machines were from the late 70's

They have just become a bit more intuitive over time.

Not only have they become more intuitive, the CNC machines available today are MUCH more capable and at the same time more affordable. I am constantly amazed by the parts we design machines for these days. Even 10 years ago it would have taken multiple machines to realize a solution that a single machine can easily tackle today.

That moment when you are programming your robot and decide that programming the use of a traditional circular saw is too difficult ... so you take the easier route and just give it a spinning blade of death that can cut in any direction

I've had an interest in computerized machine tools for a few years now... I did a project with a digitizer not too long ago. Throw the part on the table, trace it with the special pen, converts it to a CAD model, then have your 3-axis CNC slice out a carbon copy. Amazing stuff!

I'm pretty disappointed in the carpenter robot. Much of what it is doing is already being done much faster on continuous assembly line type systems. I hope they at least anointed it with an aroma of stale beer, coffee, and cigarettes so it feels like a real carpenter.

For the simple machining that is usually done with wood it often doesn't make a lot of sense to move the tool around a stationary piece of material when you can auto feed material into a stationary tool.
