Bought a 2001 BMW X5 with 88,000 miles on it.

Purchased the extended warranty offered by Carmax (although Carmax does not own the warranty company).

Problems it fixed:
Fixed the CV boot
I never knew warranty would fix that. I haven't gotten by car back, but I think they replaced the entire axle. The lady mentioned something about axle but she was talking too fast for me to understand.

Heated seat did not work
The lady told me they bought the part for $800. I am guessing that they purchased me an entirely new seat.

Heater was not blowing out hot air
Don't know what they did, but they said they fixed it.

Total Cost: $50

Should have my car ready by Tuesday.

I also got a free rental for a week of the company of my choice. 7 days $25/day reimbursement.

Sounds pretty good, thanks for the review.

Always something to consider.

Not bad. In general, are the extended warranties a better idea on used vehicles than new? I've always considered extended warranties on new vehicles somewhat of a waste, since you're covered for the first 3 years bumper to bumper by the manufacturer.

Hmmmm, $800? BMW part?

They probably bought you a 36" wiring harness.

Why wouldn't they cover a CV joint? a fair bit more critical than a heated seat.

I bought this and thought it was worth it at first. Then my cd changer broke. And they fixed it. And then it broke again.

I had them fix it five times, they refused to replace it. So I had no radio for weeks at a time. And then it would come back, work for a few days and break again.
I finally just told them to not install it back in the vehicle. They said they can not fix it again if they do not install it themselves.
So I ebayed it .
They replaced a window motor.
They also replaced my 02 sensor which now is bad again. less than a year later. YMMV

We had so many problems with Ryan Warranty, (who CarMax uses) that we stopped even taking their cars in for awhile. That was in the late 90's.
No other Ford dealer around would take it, either. Finally, we told Carmax that they could send the vehicles themselves, rather than the customers bringing them in, and THEY could deal with Ryan Warranty's cast of idiots.

God, they sucked. They would try to tell us what they were going to pay, what labor rate they'd pay, how much labor time they'd pay for certain things, etc. We were going right by the book, as all warranty companies require, and that still wasn't good enough.
Then, after we'd agree on a price with them, and we faxed the final invoice in so they could call back with a corporate CC to our cashier, they'd call in an amount less than what they agreed on in the first place.

Glad you had a good experience, lots of people don't. Taking your car directly back to Carmax is the key.
