Carl Sagan used marijuana?

So I was browsing Digg and I saw this story on Carl Sagan's alleged use of THC. While it's not surprising in the least I was wondering if anyone had more information on it. I wouldn't necessarily trust it if a pro-marijuana news paper is the only one that posted it.

Interesting none the less.

So what if he did?

It didn't make him any smarter...

And it obviously didn't hurt his career.

So who cares?

We'll thats whats interesting - he says it helped him. Obviously its effects are different for all kinds of users - but it would be a big boon to the legalization movement to have one of our most brilliant astronomers claim before his death that marijuana was good.

As others have said why bother wondering? Like Aimster says just about everyone seems to have tried it at one time or another. If it was a currently elected political it might be tabloid worthy but even then not interesting or surprising.

A boon to those in the movement maybe but not to the possibility of getting it legalized, at least in the US here in Canada we might be closer. Those fighting the 'war on drugs' aren't swayed by little things like truth, logic, and compassion.

sadly i agree with this statement :( down here in the u.s. we put border patrol agents in jail for shooting a drug smuggler and give him a deal to let him haul more drugs across the border in exchange for his testimony against said border agents. the u.s. is fvcked up and i feel bad for the men and women that are putthing their lives on the line currently for a country that is as fvcked up as ours currently is, and it is only going to get worse...:disgust:

personally I have known it to be a tool of enlightenment. I wouldn't doubt if an astronomer felt it made him smarter.

agreed... it's like examining your thoughts with a microscope. you see things in greater depth that you have ever seen without it.

It's the only way to say "Billions and Billions of stars" and be able to actually picture them all.

He used it, after his brilliance peaked, and he became a munching paranoid couch potato and grew hairy palms...

Its dubious whether it HELPS somebody (aside from the medical reasons), but its no secret that its not the home-wrecking, life-destroying danger propagandized in the past.. convincing the at-large public (or even atot, for example) is another story....

Of course Sagan smoked pot. His wife Ann Druyan, as noted in the article, sits on the NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) Foundation Board of Directors. He was also a big fan of Bob Marley's music (along with his wife, who as the creative director at NASA picked music and images for voyager 1 and 2)

I wonder if he would have left the legacy he did had he never smoked pot....I seriously doubt it.

Of course, how in the world did you think made it possible to for him to imagine about those "space aliens" who look like your father (Contact). :)
