Howdy all,

did some reading yesterday and zipped through carl sagan's 'Contact'. Hate to say it, but boy do I feel like defecting from the rc5 camp to seti...

I've read most of his works, but Contact blew my mind...

Although I'm sure the RC5 folks would be disappointed, the TA SETI members would welcome your addition! Perhaps you'd consider dividing your efforts and remain in both projects?

In any case, I know the team appreciates your efforts regardless of which project(s) that you're involved in. 🙂

BTW, I think I've read nearly everything that Sagan had ever written, or at least it seems that way; I was sad when I heard of his passing.
 
i feel that there is a certain romanticism involved with running seti...for me anyway. i'm sure there are those running the program for other reasons, but i'm in it for the "cause." like networkman says, either team is going to be appreciative of your presence because although we run separate programs, we really are part of the greater team known as Team Anandtech!
 
Well said Networkman! Big Bwana we would be glad to have you on our project..but we would never recruit you from what you are doing! It is all up to you! No money here, just dreams!!! 🙂😀🙂😀
 
It would be a joy to have you as part of the seti effort.🙂 I truly believe you have to run the project that interests you the most if you're ever going to enjoy it.🙂

I have to admit that even though I really love seti, I have been tempted as of late to help the RC5 guys in their battle against the DPC. I may have to eventually help them out a little.😉
 
That book was pretty awesome. The movie wasn't bad either, which is fairly unusual. 9 times out of 10 a movie sucks if you've already read the book.

That book is also a good motivator. I have a 10 year old nephew who has an uncanny knack for mathematics but was uninterested in science in general. A year ago I gave him "Contact" to read, and since then he has really excelled in science in school (he won first prize in the school's science fair 🙂). He now wants to be a physicist when he grows up 🙂. And before you ask, he's not a total geek, he plays basketball and soccer 😉.
 
Think of how much computing power SETI could muster by trading the "now" for the "future"....

geez, what a hard decision...!

I, too, was sad, networkman, when I heard of Sagan's passing. My brother was an undergraduate at Cornell a long time ago and is still kicking himself for not trying to take Sagan's astronomy course.

ah, well, life goes on....
