Carfax report: beware of curbstoner

I found a car on craigslist and ran the carfax report. The report says :

" Are you buying this car? Then make sure you are buying it from a licensed dealership. Otherwise, you could be a victim of curbstoning, which is illegal. A curbstoner poses as a private seller to sell vehicles for a large profit. Be sure to buy this vehicle from a licensed dealer."

The remaining car history is clean.

I called up the owner and she said that she works for a dealer and the car is with her. She is going to show the car at a local target but said that final paperwork will be done at the dealer.

Does it seem like a scam or I am reading too much into it...

Ask whether the title is in her name. It seems like there's a lot of scum bags now selling as "Private Seller"

If the price is right it sounds like the illegality of it may rest with the seller. You can play dumb? I've never heard of this before, though. The last curbstoner I saw was a guy passed out on the road from smoking too much meth. Oh wait, that was me 🙁

how much meth must you smoke to pass out? I would think you would be up for 3 weeks making chairs out of cardboard and scribbling notes to yourself 🙂

Carfax's curbstoning information page.

If the report is clean and there aren't a ridiculous amount of title transfers then this shouldn't be a problem. By Carfax's own admission, if their report comes back clean then there shouldn't be anything to worry about.

FWIW, I bought my 951 from a guys who worked at a dealership. It was his car and it came back as 100% clean on Carfax, even showing that he'd had title to it for the past 3 years. We did the paperwork at the dealership he worked for simply because they had all the necessary forms already and it was the easiest place to source them from.

Thanks guys... The title isn't in her name and I googled the dealer and can't find any information. I will go and meet her and try to find more about the dealerership and visit them before finalizing.
