did a free carfax report on my friend's car (thank you hot deals), his car has been in 2 accidents, and i did a carfax, and i got


Checked - No Accident Record Found

Actually, if the car has been reported to an insurance company it will come up on a carfax report, but if it's not reported to the insurance company then carfax is useless, since they are not mindreaders. It is good to make sure you don't buy a car with a salvaged title on it though at the very least. I wouldn't pay twenty bucks for a carfax though.
 
I ran a CarFAX on a pickup and it showed that it had been in an accident when it was one month old:
  • From a police report with case number:
    Accident Reported Vehicle involved in crash
    with another motor vehicle
When I called the owner, I mentioned that fact. He said that he bought it used and was unaware of any accidents or damage. I think a police report would have to be written before it would show up.

Edit: I do NOT see a category for accident records on any CarFAX that I've run.
