Career forum

lots of stuff is covered by OT that might make a good topic specific forum.

i'll talk this idea over with mods, but we won't do anything like this without getting some sort of member feedback.

thanks for the suggestion.

This is not a good idea - IT IS A FANTASTIC IDEA.

There should be two forums for this

!) Career dicussion - people can discuss their jobs, ask for adivce on work situations as well as ask for career advice.

2) Job Board - We can work together to keep all of us employed as well as help each other find better jobs. I know the company I work for is looking to hire people and preference is always given to an employee referral. I think it would be great if those that could, post the opportunities available at the company they work for. We could take this one step futher by allowing people to request contacts at a specific company (e.g. does anyone work for XYZ company - "I am appplying for a job there" or "who should I contact there" - A side benefit for this is that some people may even get a referral bonus for referring somebody to the company.

I do not think it would be good to allow people to post resumes but maybe we can post profiles. E.G.

Location New York, NY
Education: MBA, BA
Work Experiance: 20 years in IT as a consultant and systems engineer specializing in Network swtiching and routing and security
Certifications: MCSE CCIE

A NOTE ABOUT THE JOB BOARD
We need some way to verify that this person actually works for the company or this board will fill with recruiters like all of the social network websites. The bad thing about the recuirters is that many of them just collect resumes then forward them all to specific jobs and they do not care who gets the job or where the resume came from.

A POSSBILE SOLUTION - You can only post jobs for the company you work for and you must give your work email address (and the domain must match) and you have to reply to an email that is sent to that address. This can be done before you can post any open jobs at that company

There are still lots of flaws in my idea but there are a lot of smart people here and somebody should be able to come up with a way to prevent spamming, the flood of recruiters, etc....

I suggest a careers forum + a money/finance forum as both topics will bring about similar type of serious threads and are interrelated: e.g. how should I negotiate my salary to have best tax advantages. Also, put the tax thread into this forum.

A Career forum would be cool. I know someone like me who is getting ready to graduate might appreciate some advice on how to land the right job, salary negotiation, resume writing and such.

I think a careers forum would be a great addition to AT. It would be nice if it could be marketed outside the forums too, like perhaps on the main AT page. Perhaps a section for careers with the following forums: Jobs Wanted/Posted, Salary/Consultant rates, and Career Advice. This would be especially helpful with the declining economy and with the right sponsership (Monster/Dice/etc.) AT could pull in some big bucks I'd imagine. And at the same time you'd be helping your membership succeed in their careers and life goals.
I know as a job searcher right now, you wouldn't have to do too much to get users.

Great idea!

Rather than post a new topic, I'll add this to one of the many already up.

How about a Business & Finance sub-forum? Could cover lots of topics - business/career advice, business news, tax time/unemployment threads from OT, etc.

Buiness/Finance has repeatedly got shot down in the past ... too much ignorance and liabillity.
