you can laugh, but I have the straight PCI (not PCIe) version of the 8400GS. it has current win7 (and most other OS) drivers, draws next to no power, fits any open PCI slot and can be used as a troubleshooting card. ill have it for years to come.

BTW also gotta say my 4850 had serious legs. finally pulled it for a 6770 in my HTPC and it was for picture quality reasons, not horsepower.

and i ran SLI 12 meg Voodoo2s for a loooong time.

i think modern cards will begin to last longer and longer because game graphics improvements have began to diminish in this day and age of console ports, reusing same engines, and pc gaming starting to die

ti4200 - what a beast for $200

9700 - nuff said

8800 - longest lasting series. i bought a 8800gts on release day and had great performance for YEARS

ati 48x0 series - The beginning to ATI spanking nvidia (not trying to spark debate but this is when they became real competitive)

I'm still rocking with my HD4870x2 and it's just now starting to show it's age. I think I will replace it with a HD6990 probably next year.

8800gts my friend has one that plays just fine with bc2 and that card was a upgrade from her 9700 pro ati

8800gt/9800gt longer then hell shelf life that still plays about any game on some sort of decent setting.

Let's hope BF3 isn't gonna put a end to such great and cheap classics.

Radeon 98xx, 4670, 4770, 5850 and Geforces 6600GT, 9600GT, GTS 250, GTX 460 1 GB.

Nvidia seems to always do an excellent job on mid-range parts. While ATi never really has the best all out performance on their top end, since R700 they by far tend to be better as far as FPS/$ goes compared to Nvidia's higher end stuff.

I wish I still had all my previous graphics cards from years past, just to see how they would do against today's games. I've had quite a few tiers of graphics being both a multi-desktop and notebook person.

I gotta say the 8800gt When that card came out it caused such a fritz in pc gaming. It was better then the gts 320 and 640mb. It can still run todays games aswell.

The 8800gtx was a beast of a card but it was so damn expensive and power hungry

Here's my list of chips that have had extraordinary shelf lives as good cards.

3) AMD 5870
2) ATI 9700 Pro
1) Nvidia 8800 GTX

The criteria being that the video card is so competitive, to have a card that can be useful spanning multiple generations is really special.

To make the list, it would have to be much more powerful that the cards that came before and to have the competitor stumble upon release.

So cards like Voodoo, TNT, don't count because they got eclipsed so fast.

7800 series *
8800 series
HD4870 *
HD58XX

* = I've owned them, the other two are from what I've heard.

I'm going with the 5850 on this one. I'm rocking one in my system, and even though I'm looking at some upgrades it's only because I've got some money in my pocket. The only cards worth upgrading to from this, after 2 years, are the 69xx series. My 5850 is still going strong and if I didnt have money to upgrade I'd be fine with that.

I cant remember ever having a card 2 years old that I wasnt dying to upgrade.
