Card readers. What's good.

Seems to me most are junk. I need something decent and won't break. Is their any advantage with having one that reads like 68 formats compared to 10?

For usb memory card reader or adaptor for notebook with built in memory reader?
I for one looking for adaptor for my notebook with Ricoh 5 in 1 memory reader but mini SD wont fit in I assume I need an adaptor?

Since I only use SDHC for my digital camera, I passed on the front-panel readers that take every format under the sun and got a Rosewill RSD-CR106 USB reader from the egg. Works great, transfers very quickly and cost me $8 shipped. It caps on both ends, so the only downside to it that I can see is you might lose the caps. Every Rosewill accessory I've bought so far has proven to be money well spent.

I have some similar units for SD / SDHC cards. Got them on Ebay for $1 each + shipping so bought about 5 of them.
Works fine. For normal use, I use a Sandisk mutlicard external USB reader .. I have this one from EBay

SDHC SD USB 2.0 Memory Card Reader for 2GB 4GB 8GB 16GB Item number: 220444536356 $0.99 each
You can't beat the cost and they do work

I'm on my third USB card reader. All of them worked, but only the latest one is what I'd call "fast". It's the Sandisk ImageMate "All-in-One USB 2.0 Reader", SDDR-189-A20.

It hits up to around 30 MB/s actual file transfers with CF, and around 20 MB/s with SD.

There are other fast/faster devices. See this and also their CF reader chart:

Personally, I dislike multi-media readers. I have two cameras - one CF and the other SD/SDHC. Therefore I have two single readers and they are part of my camera kits.

I like singles because they don't clutter up my system with a bunch of extraneous drive letters. 🙂

My favorites are by SanDisk.

I also have a Sandisk Image Mate 12 in 1 Model#SDDR-89V4 .. Part#20-90-03103 ... Works great and the new ones (within the last 6 mos or so) can be reflashed with new firmware if needed (like to be able to see SDHC cards) .. The early models were not flashable. The SanDisk site tells you how to see if your model can be flashed.

Link to firmware page (this is well hidden on the SandDisk web site)

All you want is one that reads the type you use and a few other, popular types in case a friend drops by. I have a combo card reader and floppy drive, but it can't read the new HC cards, so I got a little, external reader from Media Gear (model MGTR-910 - called the "Ultra AllCards USB2.0. Got it cheap via WalMart's online store w/ free ship to my local store. Works well with my old standard SD cards and with my new HC cards. Seems to move the data pretty quick, but I seldom have to transfer more than a few pix at a time.I guess they were clearancing that item as I don't see it on their site any more. Most of the mini and micro chips will require an adapter to work with most readers - only buy that type of cards that come with adapters (unless you already have an adapter).
