Card not detecting LCD monitor if not seen at bootup?

I just replaced my old CRT monitor with a new Samsung 214T LCD monitor. The new monitor is connected to my nvidia 6800 card with a DVI cable, and it normally works great, as long as the monitor is powered on before Windows boots up.

But I've discovered that if I boot up my computer while the monitor is not on, when I power it on I will never get any picture on it (monitor seems to indicate there is no digital signal). If I then blind reboot while the monitor is on, everything is fine.

What I've noticed:
- Once Windows is booted up, I can turn the monitor on and off all I like without any problems.
- If I turn the monitor on while the computer is still in the text mode portion of booting up, it comes on immediately and works as expected.
- If I turn the monitor on after Windows is loaded (I can tell by hearing the windows intro sound), I will not get any display.

It seems to me that the video card or the video driver is looking for a monitor on the DVI line, and if it doesn't see it right then, deactivates the line and never uses it again even though I later power the monitor up.

The workaround is simple enough, but my wife and kids also use the computer and this is a pain in the butt if you forget...

Is there some setting I can make to force the card to always use the DVI link? (BTW, it's already set to use it the digital connection in the display settings). Any other ideas how to fix this?

Thanks!

All I can say is strange issue. I've booted up multiple computers with integrated Intel graphics, discrete nVidia cards and discrete ATI cards and never ran into that problem.
