Card for Rendering

Hi there,

My first post over here. After all these years I decided to join.

Im thinking of buying gtx 1060 or 1070 for gpu bound rendering.
The reason I havent decided on it is because of the memory factor. So far I have been using CPU renderers so Im not familiar how much memory do scenes take in gpu bound. That was just to explain why Im ruminating between these.

Since Im not that much familiar with gpus, I would like to ask you, what brands gpus are worth considering.
Feel free to post as much as you can since Im not sure I could find all of em in my country.

My preferences are durability and low noise levels.

The card will be used for mostly rendering, and slight gaming.

Thanks

I can't say anything about rendering, but in general, I like EVGA cards for their quality, warranty and customer service.

Also, for the difference in price, I would go for the 1070TI right now. I saw some good prices recently, just over $400.

This one is not EVGA, but I have gotten some Zotac cards in the past, and they have been fine. $408 https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500430R

How about Gigabyte Aorus (1060 1070)? Are they silent , reliable?

Also EVGA 1070 ACX?

I would really appreciate if someone with 1070 would post their score.

I would only purchase an EVGA or MSI gpu. Gigabyte is horrible to deal with and has poor quality control, and Asus and Zotac are also a pain to deal with.

Which EVGA?

They silent? Ive heard Pascal was horrible on them because of overheating, they tried to battle it with pads.

I've ran many FTW cards and they have all been solid. Gigabyte cards on the other hand have been terrible and their customer service has been abysmal. MSI has been great as well.

No, that pad thing was a proactive thing. I had several cards, and none died or had a problem, but EVGA RMA'ed them anyway.

What do you guys think of ACX? Perhaps iCX, if I find a good deal on it, but highly unlikely. Currently the difference is 40 euros. ACX is more in my budget.
Is it worth the difference? As I said silence and reliability is my pick.

Any EVGA card rocks for reliability and silence.

I tried EVGA for 3 generations prior to the 900 generation and each card went bad within its warranty period, but the replacement cards usually lasted longer. I did like their trade up option and the way they looked but for the 900 generation, I went with Gigabyte because they had a 960 card with 4 GB when most just did 2 GB and it has been my fall back card after giving other family members my higher end cards.

I've had a ton of Gigabyte cards go bad and their RMA process takes literally a month to two months a pop. I've had great luck with MSI and EVGA Pascal cards.

I dont know the exact score for 1070, but 1080 gets between 130-150, depending on the OC and surprisingly, the CPU clocks. I have 2 Evgas 1080 FTW2 acx and get around 300 points in Octanebench. 1070 would most likely get 3/4 score of 1080, same way it boasts 3/4 of its shaders. So up to 120 would be my guess.

Anyway, if you can afford, definitely get upcoming RTX card. At least 2070. Thanks to the RTX tech its gonna be up to 5x-10x faster than Pascal cards with all the major renderers - Octane makers advertise 5x-8x speedup for their 2019 Vulcan-based build. Those additional money are definitely worth it IMO.
Regarding VRAM, the more the merrier, but with Octane at least you get "out of core" feature, which allows you to drop data above your vram buffer into system RAM. There is always geometry instancing too, which helps to solve this. Personally, i usually work on small scale stuff, like family houses, small flat houses or admin/retail buildings, flat interiors etc...and for the past 2 years i was always able to get away with the 8GB frame-buffer of my 1080s.

So that is my advice.
