Carbon fiber hoods are fugly.

I think there are some exceptions:

Jesus fuck that is an affront to eyes of humans everywhere.

With the right overall package they can look good, just as the matte black hoods on some late 60's Mopars did. But you need more than just a hood to look good.

Example:
If you had a carbon fiber hood and painted your roof and trunk graphite, it would be in effect a two tone style and look complete.

...and as far as roof scoops go, the engine better be behind the driver.

I'd like one, but I'm undecided as far as painting it to match. A vented hood will reduce high-speed floatyness on my car, but we don't have any autobahns here anyway so there's not much point. :/

I'm not sure I've ever seen a carbon fiber hood. I don't really notice new cars though. With very few exceptions, they all bore me.

i just wonder how they compromise crash performance. i take it that regular hoods have a bit of crumple zone built into them as they fold up in a head on collision.... not sure how a carbon fiber would behave..esp something just hacked together.

Couldn't be much worse than aluminum hoods, right?

Carbon Fiber would probably fair reasonable well(no worse then normal stuff). Due to being strong and lightweight. Just a guess though, till searching for a vid.

Okay video found and the kind of bend everywhere, though stayed in one peice.

Real carbon fiber is one of the strongest materials out there, actually. There are carbon fiber wheels that have been tested by dropping off thousands of feet onto rocks and no cracking occurred. I forget which brand, but I'll try to look for it

Well I'd think they'd do worse since the stock hoods are specially made to crumple in a certain way and carbon fiber hoods obviously are not.

Most impact absorption/ energy dissipation is not from the hood. 😛
Its really only a question of what get damaged more, in a real accident doesn't real matter the hood will need to get replaced no matter what. Only issue would be parts of hood being sent into the passenger cabin which at least in the test I found didn't happen.

(You know, it's great as long as it doesn't get launched through the car..:X)

that isn't the point of a crumple zone😉

But, a lot of these hoods are stickers D:

yea i've seen those tests. but those are engineered and tested. some custom shop doesn't give a sh*t about that as long as it fits, its nothing more than trim to them.

Something that is attached with some hooks and a hinge really isn't absorbing much energy though. 😛

Oh, those are supposed to be carbon fiber? I thought those guys were just too poor to afford paint jobs.
