CAR WON'T START! - Please help need to get to work.

Last night I tried to turn on my car but nothing happened, no sounds at all, so I thought the battery might be out and sure enough my lights were on. So, since there is no way another car can fit next to mine to give a boost, I took out the battery charger and left the battery to charge through out the night. This morning, I looked at the charger and it says 2 AMPS @ 0 (full), 2 AMPS @ 1. And I tried starting the car again and the same thing, no sounds, the internal dashboard lights turn on, but no starter sound or anything.

Any idea what it could be? Is it a battery problem?

Any help would be appreciated, I have to get to work today, and without a car I'm stuck. If you need to know anything else, let me know.

one thing you can do... clean the eletrodes... before you make the contacts...
sounds like the battery isn't the problem.

there is no sound at all??

Not a clicking? If the battery is drained, usually all you will here is clicking when you turn the key.

If the Battery was old you might have killed it. Sometimes when you drain a battery really far down it will not take a charge anymore. It sounds like this is what happend. Go get a new battery and if that doesn't work just return it. Thats the first thing that needs to be done.

Does your headlight light up to full brightness?

Yes= the problem is starter solenoid or starter itself

No= low battery

Yes, the wipers, dashboards, and lights turn on, but no sound, and no clicking. Were is the solenoid ?

Sounds like the starter is stuck. What kind of car do you have? You need to find the starter and wack it with a hammer a few times to release it.

agreed, whack that starter 🙂 I had that problem for a while, man it was annoying to have to get under the car in the winter and nail that puppy, good luck

crap...that means I gotta tow it to the mechanic. It's a 95 Acura Integra.

So it's either the starter or the solenoid. Were are these located?

thanks

Hard to say where it is, cause I have extremely little experiance with cars...also check the wires leading to the starter, could be just a bad contact. Wiggle them a little (once you find it) and try it again 😉

His lights would still come on if it was just the starter.

he said they do

if its a manual transmission car then try to push start it! 🙂
Might need some help cause its real tiring by yourself

What's the temp up in Seattle? If it gets too cold, some weak battery wouldn't start at all and makes no sound. That's what happened with my 85 Accord beater edition in Minneapolis. Go to K-Mart and grab a new battery for like $50 and change it yourself, it's a piece of cake.

Note: Make sure you bring your old battery for a discount.

Thanks,

I'll try the battery, if that doesn't work, I'll have to shell out the cash for a tow and mechanic.

sigh.

What's interesting is I just tried starting my 2nd computer, and I push the on button, but no sound and no boot. The PS doesn't even start. I checked the connections, and they are fine. When I turn the PS on, the mobo light turns on, but that's as far as it goes. Any insights on this starting problem? Should I buy a new mobo or case?

thanks

As for the car, as people have said, its most likely the starter. I'd go to the local car shop (Auto Zone, Pep Boys, whatever) and pick up a reference book for your car (the name and author escapes me, but they always have them by the register) and that can give you the location of EVERY part in the car 🙂

As for the computer, try clearing the CMOS. If that doesn't work, take everything out of the case and put teh mobo on a box and hook it all up.

Notice anything strange about your car the last time you drove it before it wouldn't start? I blew out a starter once because it didn't disengage. After the engine started, the starter stayed engaged and just ran with the engine. I heard a high pitched whine, and not fully realizing what was going on I let the car run while trying to figure out what the noise was. I shut down the car, and when I tried to start it back up there was nothing; the starter had burnt out.

well, I unplugged everthing and replugged again and the computer is working now. And as soon as I can get a ride, I'll got to the auto shop and see about the starter etc.

Thanks for the help...it's one of those days.

Some interesting things happened before this car problem. The other day the car wouldn't start, the starter would crank, but no ignition. So I charged the battery for 30 minutes and it worked fine. Then yesterday, I went out early with the car and gave a friend a boost to his car, drove back, and parked my car. Then 40 minutes later when I got in again it wouldn't start. So I figured the boost had drained the battery, but even after an overnight charge, it still won't start.

If the car doesn't start well after a boost you gave to your friend, it's almost certain your battery is drained. I'd recommend changing the battery first to see if that solves your problem. As you know, seeing a mechanic will cost a lot more than the price of a new battery. Also, if the new battery doesn't work, you can always return it at K-Mart.
