Car with great gas mileage?

I should find out todya if I got a new job I'm in the running for. If I do I will triple my drive time. My current car has been acting up lately and doesn't get all that great gas mileage so I may be in the hunt for something new.

My main requirements are:
Great gas mileage
4-doors (decent interior room)
Low-ish price
 
Define great mileage. My wife's Volvo S40 T5 averages 28 city and 35 highway. 220+ HP and torque too.

Well, I would hope for at least mid 30s highway and upper 20s approaching 30 city.

A Ta-ho!

Actually, a Cavalier would be dirt cheap and have good gas mileage. Judging by my past experience and the sheer number I see running around town, they seem to be reliable enough, despite the Honda fanboi's...

A civic or corolla/echo get the best gas mileage for a gasoline non-hybrid, and they will probably be the most reliable as well.

You can get even better mileage from a Jetta/Golf TDI if you're willing to go diesel.
 
Civic for the best mileage, but not great interior room. Its not bad by any means, but 5 people don't fit too well. Also, someone 6'+ in the back just doesn't work.

You can probably get a new Accord with decent options for under $20K, dealers around here have lots of them and can't keep Civics on the lot. Accord is rated like 26/32, but most people get more than 26 in the city. Very roomy, great features, awesome car.

Used...I'm not sure. there's always Civic/Accord/Camry/etc, but their prices are pretty high for a used car. I'd rather get new at that point personally.
 
I drive Corolla '03 EX, I get 28city/38hwy probably around $9-10k now.

Civic HX is the way to go for best fuel, 02 go for $9k. They're supposed to get about 38/44mpg but I don't know about that one... maybe if you stay under 2000rpm hahaha right.

If your really trying to be cheap I recommend 94 Civic DX $4k 34-40mpg.

If your hella cheap and you need a good gas milage car. Go with 00-02 Hyundai Accent. It's a 2dr haha about $2k or less and average 27-33mpg.
