Ugh. I more than know what it's like to have a sting of bad luck. Hopefully things will turn around.

Your bike has appreciated almost 100% over time?

Bought it during a closeout. Literally, one of the last Iron Horse road bikes ever sold. It was regularly around $700. It's an off brand when it comes to road bikes (Established brand in the MTB business though). A comparable road bike, like I said, is around $1000. Full Tiagra, sti shifters, carbon fork, etc is usually in the $1000 range. One can find Sora sets, but I don't want Sora. I want >= Full Tiagra and STI shifters. (Or comparable SRAM variants)

For $572 brand new after tax was a bargain.

That sucks. Unfortunately it will probably never be recovered. I would watch craigslist in and around your area to see if it pops up.

Thieves are stupid, but if this guy does a single search for my bike online... He'll never find a road bike Iron Horse for sale. Exceptionally uncommon in the PNW (did some searches already). He would be incredibly stupid to list it.

Bikes are over-priced. You can get a good used motorcycle for that much.

Don't get me wrong:
I understand and don't even for a second think that one is a substitute for another. It's just a hard pill for me to swallow and I would never spend that much no matter how much carbon, magnesium, or titanium it had.

Maybe he was implying that you need to put your bike in a secure location. I have my people put their bikes in a locked storage room.

yes, that's what i meant. i wouldnt leave my Trek unattended.
if i have to do grocery shopping or whatnot, i take the disposable bike (under 100 bux). i lock it up with a cheap chain and know the bike will still be there when i come out.

It's not like I had an option, folks. I have a locked bike room that I store my bike in, but when I go out... I don't have more secure options. I lock it up and hope for the best.

Next you will wake up with a scar on your belly and realized someone has harvested your kidneys.

Aaaaand I guess admitting that in the post wasn't enough to head off this comment? Fine. I still say that good bicycles cost too much.

It was a pretty nonsensical comparison. Bro.

I'm looking for another bike but I shouldn't. I only have two-ish months before I do a cross country trip (on the road for two months) and then settle somewhere. I won't have any place to store it, probably. (I might be able to with my parents)

You left a "high-end" bicycle unattended on the streets of Seattle?

Rest assured, you don't have to worry about your virginity being stolen from you.

It's not an Orbea... so I wouldn't call it high-end. If you mean, a good step above a wal-mart bike then yes... "high-end."

it's high end to be locked up on the street.

I see much more expensive bikes locked on the street. That said, if I had a viable option, I would have locked it up elsewhere. I was out of my residence, I didn't have an option.

As a fellow bike commuter, the answer is to have 2 bikes: a nice bike and a shit "lock it outside" bike.

a little late now though.

That really sucks. Even here theft is becoming an issue. There are break ins every now and then and especially people constantly checking if doors are locked. Some criminals are so lazy they wont even try to break into something, they just look for something unlocked.

Best bet is get yourself a used bike for cheap. As much as it's nice to have something high end, it's a bigger target. You can always get a high end bike for going around where you don't plan to leave it locked somewhere, and then a crappy bike for locking.

If you are really being targeted I would definitely set something up to secure your apartment. Either a wireless alarm system that you pay for monitoring, or rig up something that alerts you.

I have no options for secure indoor locking at any place that I go to. So, yes, a little late.

Which is why I said "high-end" bicycle. Obviously not the most expensive bike available...but definitely too spendy to leave unattended...especially at night on the streets of Seattle.

never lock your bike. no matter how expensive the lock is, a good thief can just freeze it and your bike is gone in under a minute.
sorry for the lost dude. hopefully it will show up on CL if u really want it back.

clearly i need to make some A286 locks :hmm:
