Car tune ups, is it a must?? How much would it cost?

I'm thinking of going to Pepboys to get my car tuned up but don't know if it would be a waste of money. I've noticed that my car mileage is not at all the greatest. It burns 13-14 gal in 200 miles. I've checked the air filter and it's pretty clean so I guess it's something to do with the internal?? I'm driving a 2.4L Mitsubishi Galant with 112k miles on it.

Anybody have any experience with Pepboys?? I'm looking for something AFFORDable here. 😀

Yup, it's a fuel injected engine. I read somewhere in AT that those stuffs will kill the engine faster??
 
when was the last time you changed the plugs, wires, cap & rotor, fuel filter, flushed the rad(what year is it?) etc.?
 
Look....none of the parts on your car will last forever. Your gas mileage indicates something is wrong. You should only use eight gallons or so in 200 miles. If the car is running ok...not cutting out, etc....I doubt a plain tune-up will fix anything. You probably are having a rich-mixture problem. Could be an O2 sensor or any other emission part. If I were you, I'd go to a dealer first. Those other places usually just keep putting in parts, hoping to fix something.
 
I don't know when was the last time the rotor, plug or wires were changed. I've changed the oil 1000 miles ago and that included oil filter too. Is oil filter = fuel filter??

I'm planning to change the spark plugs this coming week. Does the distributer caps and wire play a major part in the gas mileage??

Bluefront..When you said go to a dealer, do you mean straight to an authorized Mitsu dealer???
 
Yeah..I did mean a Mitsu dealer. Like I said, if the car is running ok and just getting poor gas mileage, plugs, rotors, caps, wires, filters, probably won't do the fix. The Mitsu dealer should have the necessary equiptment to figure out the problem. Some after-market shops might be able to do the job right, but most will lack the necessary equiptment,

You think some 18 year old kid working at the local Clown Lube place could properly diagnose a high-emission/poor gas mileage problem? Likely he'd just put in a bunch of un-necessary parts....you'd pay the bill, your gas mileage would still be bad, they'd shrug you off.
 
if you're an AAA member, you can make an appointment with them for a computerized diag to find out what's wrong with your car. Then you can either fix it yourself or bring your car to a shop. Bringing it to the dealer will cost you a fortune.
 
Before investing in the tune-up, check your tire pressure and wheel alignment. If your tire pressure is too low, or if your car has too much toe-in or toe-out, your tires' rolling resistance will increase, and your gas mileage will go down dramatically. Ever try to ride a bike with underinflated tires?
 
If you came to my shop the first thing I would do is ask...

1. Is the engine light on.... YES then pull engine code and follow its lead...No then go to 2.

2. Ask when the Plug Wires, Plugs, Cap/rotor, fuel filter, PCV valve, and O2 sensor has been replaced. If it has been over 40-60K then replace these items as they are maintaince and should have been done.

3. Clean Fuel Injectors and Throttle body

If 2 and 3 fix it then be happy, if not now that you are caught up on maintaince then you need to start checkig the motor, like Comp. test, Vacuum leaks (open your hood while running and listen for a sucking sound, this is common after a car ages a little). etc...
