Car trouble - Help?

Hi guys,
I have a 2000 Ford Explorer and when I went to start it up just now it wouldn't, so I gave it a little gas on the next try it started, but died as soon as I took my foot off the pedal. Now it'll start and run fine, but whenever I take my foot off the pedal, it shuts off.

I'm guessing something is wrong with the idle adjustment, but I really have no idea. It ran perfectly fine before just now. Does anybody know what might be wrong?
 
It could be your idle, or something related to it... I'd start with the cheap solutions first, then work your way up to the expensive ones...Most likely your car won't have a idle adjustment screw, so you can scratch that. I don't know what think of that could cause that problem. What exactly happens? Does it slowly die, or does the engine die immediately? Maybe its a faulty fuel pump? Clogged fuel filter? Faulty injectors?
 
Is this a 4 liter v6? Do you have a K&N filter in it? Is it cold where you are? You can try resetting the computer by disconnecting your battery for 10 minutes.
 
Well, as I let off the gas, the rpm's just keep getting lower until it just shuts off. It doesn't ever stop where it should to idle.

4 liter V6, everything is stock. It's not cold, it's about 80 outside. Thanks, I will try resetting the computer.
 
42,000 miles so no..it's not under warranty anymore. Unfortunately.

Also, resetting the computer didn't work. The dealer will rip me off if I go there. What's a good repair place?
 
i've gotten what i believe to be ripped off by the dealer numerous times, but they are backed by Ford, so you're guaranteed quality service. Just bite the bullet...at my dealership, it's $60 to look at anything, and if you have them perform the service, that $60 gets credited towards the service.

do yu get a check engine light?

you might want to check if anything is clogging your air filter or anything past it.

I had a simialr problem but for way different reasons. the IAC valve wasn't shutting properly but tha was due to something else ... casue my spedometer wasn't working at teh time either.

 
I have heard lately that Ford has been having a rather large problem with cars stalling.. not sure why.. my dad works at a Ford dealership.. he told me when i told him I was sitting at a light, and a brand new F150 beside me stalled out.. sounds like your car has the bug too! :Q
 
What type of engine is it the 4.0 OHV or 4.0 OHC?

Also when it stalls back out is it missing real bad or stalling like it is choked?

If you can answer these questions I might be able to help.

It's the SOHC engine. It sounds perfectly fine if I give it just a little bit of gas, but as I take the pressure off the pedal, it never 'catches' where it should and idles, the rpm's just keep going down until when I take my foot completely off the pedal it shuts off.

So I take it that is a nop for a bad miss. If so then it sounds like you have a fuel problem. I would first check the fuel filter. After that you rwill need to get a fuel pressure gauge. This will tell you if the fuel pump is sending enough fuel. Then check your fuel pump fuse. Also fords have a fuel cut off switch. Look in the owners manual and make sure it is not kicked over. If so reset it.

Try these thing and write back with what you find.

Ok, this is weird. I drove the truck over to Midas to get it looked at, with my foot on both pedals as necessary to maintain sufficient RPM to keep the engine alive. It still quit about 3 times because I wasn't very good at that. Anyway, the repair guy drives it into the garage and it stalls once on him. He starts it up again and ..... it runs fine...doesn't shut off anymore.

He comes and tells me that the thing is fine now. I go back there and there's the truck, idling with no problems whatsoever, just grinning at me. So, I shut it off a few times and start it again and everything seems fine. I told him that I'd just take it and wait for it to happen again.

Really bizarre.
 
Just call up the dealership and ask.. that's gotta be a free fix from the dealership...

it's a known problem from what i have heard.

That's what I would do. I would go to the dealership for any engine/driveability work. You know it won?t be the first 2000 Explorer they've seen in 3 months. They know their product, and they're likely to fix it right the first time, rather than getting stumped and throwing parts at it. I would suspect the failure of a single component or sensor that's causing your problem, such as an airflow meter, a manifold pressure sensor, or the idle air controller. I?d let the people who see Explorers day in and day out figure this one out.
 
Dude! Midas?

You'll pay more than you would at the dealership, and you'll have a bunch of low rent dolts working on your truck's expensive engine. Oh, and they use cheap replacement parts, not OEM Ford parts. Oh well, it's your $18,000 truck. Good luck.
