Car stereo problem ... please chime in

I am having a problem with an audio installation in my truck. Both the head unit and amp are Sony. I installed the equipment about 5 years ago and everything has worked perfectly since then. Last week I hooked up an MP3 player to the aux input port on the front of the unit (first time I had ever done it). The stereo sounded fine, everything worked great. Later in the day I did the same exact thing and heard a faint crackling sound (2 or 3) coming from the speakers ... and then nothing, no sound since.

The head unit equalizer shows that the tuner and disc player are working. I took the head unit out and checked the fuse ... it hasn't blown. I checked the fuses (2x25 amp) on the amp and they are fine as well.

There is one thing that I cannot figure out: The manual for the amp states that the amp has a built-in protection circuit. If the unit is OK the LED on the amp should be green. If there is a problem (the amp has gone into "protection mode" then the LED will be red. When I power up the amp the LED is flashing green. That is not a feature described in the manual.


I would appreciate any advice/feedback from anyone who has experience with these types of car audio issues.

That's probably a wiring problem. Disconnect the speaker wiring at the amp and see if it stays green.

A reminder for you all: When you plug or unplug mp3 player, remember to turn the volume down, or your speakers can get blown.

If speakers are not blown, go with LTC8k6's suggestion.

Disconnect the audio inputs and all speaker outputs. Turn on the stereo to test.

If it still doesn't work try disconnecting the ground and leave it for about 5 minutes and reconnect. If it's still flashing then the amp is probably bad.

yup. i had similar issue before. turned out to be a bad ground, the installer had left a rear speaker wire in a place where it would get pinched when i opened the back door. eventually it shorted, and would put the HU into fault.
