Car stereo not working...

I have a Sony (model unknown) flip-down-face radio/cd/mp3 player that would not turn on while coming home from my friends house tonight.

It opened up when I turned the car on (it goes to its last position, open or closed, when you turn the car on) but nothing lit up, and nothing played.

I could eject the CD I had in there, and it let me push the button to close the face, but when I pushed the button to open it, nothing happened.

When I got home I checked it?s fuse and it was good, but I swapped it with a known working one that was the same, and still nothing.

Any ideas? It would really suck for it to be dead because it was totally random (I have not abused it at all and it has shown no signs of problems previously), and it?s worth about $250. Hopefully there is an simple solution to it all.

Thanks for your ideas in advance!

Edit:
Check below for updates.

Edit 2:
Took it into a car stereo specialty place on my way home from school... it was proclaimed dead.

It's a sony 😛

It could be just it failed. Sounds like an electronics failure really. Is it under warranty still?

I don't think its still under warranty... any idea how long it might be? Sony is always a PITA to deal with re. support of any kind.

It was in the car when I got it so I don't have much information about it.

Edit:
I just looked it up by looking through google images...

Its a CDX-M850MP 1Yr warranty.

Is it detachable face? If so, try to remove and replace it. Mine locked up the other day and all of the buttons and display stopped working...still played and the volume was stuck loud as hell.

It's a fold down face, so it's not "detachable" per se, but it looks like it will come off after I take a couple screws out of the hinges.

There is also a reset button inside (if I can get the front off) and I'll give that a shot.

Thanks for the ideas!

There may be 2 fuses to this radio. One in the back of it attached to the wire harness and the one under the dash that was used for the old radio, and is still used for yours if the person who installed it did it correctly. If it has power to one part of the system but not the other you will get it to half ass work with very limited, or no functions at all. In your case it is limited.

If you checked the fuse under the dash where all the other car fuses are at then pull the radio out and check the one in the wiring harness, visa versa if you did it the other way around.

I'm about to go take it apart...

I just got my vehicle inspection done and asked them about it too. The guy there said that it could be the fuse, or (as was in his case) the stock amp that powers it (and powered the stock radio) might have died. He said the only way to check that is to take it to the dealer.

Edit:
Ok, so I took it all apart and got a multimeter and tested a few things.

The power from the harness and got 12.3-12.5v ...
Then the continuity on the harness contacts and they all seemed good...
And I also replaced the fuse (which was good)...

I hooked it all back up, and still nothing worked.

I tested the power right from the harness while it was hooked up, and I was getting about 12v then also.

Thoughts?
