Ok, I got a new head unit for my car. When I installed it I found out that only the right-sides worked (left side chanels did nothing, and no it wasn't the balance knob ;)). Anyways to counteract this I just put both the right & left side speakers on the same channels (front left & right on front left channel & rear left & right on rear channel). When I first installed it, it would work fine up to 24 (of 40) on the volume. At that point it would just mute it's self & I would have to turn it off & back on again. I then decided that I would just run it @ 23 & under thinking that the less load would work fine. After about 15 min. of use it will no longer play anything. I imagine I killed it, but anyone have any ideas on how I could revive this stereo?

BTW, don't bother flaming with how that was such a bad idea to wire it like that, it was a cheep stereo for a cheep car & I figured that if it worked at all it's better than the no radio I had before.

I'm going to guess that you didn't use a wiring harness adapter, and I?m going to tell you that because of that, you hooked up the speaker wires wrong and ?short circuited? the amplifier. Then, you doubled the draw on the channels that were hooked up correctly, and now the thing got cooked from the heat. If you?re lucky, it will have thermal protection and so it will reset itself without damage. If not, try to exchange it, and this time, make that effort to hook it up correctly.

i really don't understand why you continued to use it after you found out it was defective in the first place.

Because it was free (the left sides wre dead when I got it).

Oh. When you mention that you got a "new" deck, we thought that that was what you meant.

Well, the simple answer is that by hooking up two 4 ohm speakers to the same channel, you lower the resistance to 2 ohms, which overheats the amp. Since it was already half dead, the rest of it was probably already on the way out.

Yeah, that's kinda what I figured. Considering that it should still work fine other than the built-in amp I think I'll try an external amp.
