car stalling

'97 Eagle Talon - non-turbo, automatic

After accelerating then letting off the gas, as the RPM dips back low it will just drop to 0 and the engine stalls out and I lose all power (power brakes/steering). Reproduced this while accelerating then release, under neutral. The check oil light came on the two times it happened in my presence... but before that, the stalls were proceeded by the check engine light as well as the brake lights.

Is this a fuel delivery problem or a sensor of some sort?

Sounds like the EGR valve malfunction.

I'm reading this comes with a rough idle which I don't feel. The mechanic who happened to have his shop across the strret from where it broke down said he cleaned the fuel rail / throttle body and it hadn't happened again after a couple blocks driving. This is an old car and I'm not sure when that was last cleaned out. Could this be it because he couldn't be positive about it since it has't recurred in the short period. Afraid the 30 minute drive home may show problems again.

My 1996 Galant had the same problem when I used to start it cold. Turned out I had almost no Transmission Oil and eventually the torque converter broke in half...lol

Check your transmission oil? It couldn't hurt to check? I believe my Galant had the same engine as your Talon.

Also, if you are interested, I have a friend selling a 97 TSi as a parts car. Failed project car since he can't get it titled. Has an upgraded turbo (I think its 30lb or larger), headers and exhaust. Car runs and moves, but untitleable since the owner died and no one knows wtf to do with the car.

Stalling when returning to idle is generally the sign of a fault in the EGR system. If there were problems with the fuel delivery issue you'd probably notice it more under load than at idle.

Throttle body is definitely something that could cause an issue with idle or returning to idle.

Are there any codes stored?

bingo - same thing you described happened to me when I had my '87 Subaru. Took the EGR valve out and soaked it in carb cleaner for a few hours, put it back in and all was well.

there were no codes stored according to the guy and the 30 min drive home in stop & go traffic went smoothly after just the $45 throttle body job. I'll update if anything changes.
