after having a bad experience with a local cop recently, i want to invest in a car cam in my car that is discreet, able to withstand heat from inside a car on a hot day.

i know i can use my smart phone as a video recorder, but i know it would look suspicious when im pulled over with the camera end of the phone facing the driver side window. plus im pretty sure they try and do a good lookover of your car for possible drugs, weapons, and also surveillance cameras.

Bad cops are out there. Ever hear the phrase, "you can't fight city hall? " It's easier and healthier to move.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to record cops, if it's not illegal they'll still find a way to arrest you as they normally do when they see someone doing it, or just beat the shit out of you. Though I suppose if they're well hidden and don't notice them it wont hurt to post the footage on youtube anonymously (from another location, using a proxy, etc... remember public computers such as internet cafes may have cameras too) if anything ever happens.

Give some thought to who would be shown the video and what you expect the results to be.

Anything else you want to pull out of your ass? Although many cops would like to believe that is true, it is not.

I don't believe he's right but I'm pretty sure some states have weird wire tapping laws which could be construed to mean just this. So check your own state. If you tell the cop you are recording, then it isn't wire tapping if he's aware of it.

And those laws have been ruled unconstitutional.

So record away and protect yourself.

my cousin is a cop, personally I find some of the stuff I see on youtube deplorable and those guys earn their nicknames. But hey they are people too with human emotions, doing a job where they meet people at the their worst. He always tells me he doesn't think the worst of people but he always thinks there's that possibility. So he has to act in such away and be consistent about it.

Personally I think you are doing it the wrong way. Course I don't know the specifics, you need to report it so that there is now a paper trail. Doing it your way can go bad in a real hurry.

Those are about recording in public. Someone could argue that a police officer standing next to your car window talking to you is considered a "private" conversation and subject to wire tapping protections. I wouldn't make that case. I know what's right, I'm just saying watch out because cops will try and do anything in their power to protect that power. Including charging you with baseless crimes.

I I understand that they're human and make mistakes... but the law protects them to a disgusting degree. Things that are felonies for you and I are just a day in the life for a cop. They truly are above the law.

Blackvue dashcam: ($439 on Amazon)

http://www.blackvueusa.com/DR550GW-HD.html

Has a front & rear HD cameras, can be wired directly into your vehicle (12V adapter too for convenience), GPS tracking (works with Google Maps to show location), parking mode with motion detection. Best one on the market imo.

Also... I'm not sure "hidden" is your best option. Rather than catching the cops behaving badly, I'd prefer they just not act badly at all. Personally, I'd use your phone to record any interactions (no harm in having a dashcam or in-car backup too) and use an app like bambuser or the ACLU's app that auto uploads recordings to a remote server.

Cops are less likely to act up knowing they are on camera. If they do and take your camera/attempt to delete the recording, they can't. I'd also make sure my phone was password protected.

Anything else you want to pull out of your ass? Although many cops would like to believe that is true, it is not.

Why don't you pull your head from your ass and read:
If you are recording someone without their knowledge in a public or semi-public place like a street or restaurant, the person whom you're recording may or may not have "an objectively reasonable expectation that no one is listening in or overhearing the conversation," and the reasonableness of the expectation would depend on the particular factual circumstances. Therefore, you cannot necessarily assume that you are in the clear simply because you are in a public place.

If you are operating in California, you should always get the consent of all parties before recording any conversation that common sense tells you might be "private" or "confidential." In addition to subjecting you to criminal prosecution, violating the California wiretapping law can expose you to a civil lawsuit for damages by an injured party. See Cal. Penal Code § 637.2.

Secretly taping cops is just asking for trouble. The cops will easily bend and interpret the law in their favor.

i did issue a complaint against the offending officer to the local watch commander. evidently the officer doesn't want to have a talk with me with the watch commander as a mediator, sounds like he has something to hide, or not too proud of.

i just want to protect myself from cops that act like they are above the law. that way i have actual proof.
