Yes, they are great speakers, go get them ASAP! I've heard polk, Rockford Fosgate, etc. and I like Pionner the best.... I also have 2 6 x 1/2 Pionner's.

Do ANY of you guys know ANYTHING about car speakers?

I am a total newbie, but I wanna put a "decent" system in my car (low price, good bass, better than the ones that come with the car)...

Anyways, like I said, I know very little about car audio...

Can anyone help me out with some stuff?

 1. Do I need an AMP if I want to use a couple sufwoofers?
 2. Do I need one of those speaker housing boxes (that sit in your trunk?)
 3. Can I listen to sound through subwoofers only, or do I need speakers (I know that subwoofers play lower (or was it higher) freqencies....so do I need speakers to play the "regular" frequencies?)

Lastly, does anyone know any good beginner sites?

I am looking to buy some subs from E*Bay, since they have them at a good price...Are sub woofers like the ones below even worth getting (I must say, I am on a VERY tight budget...Approx $100 for speakers, sub, maybe amp, *might* get a tape/cd player)

two

1) How big are the subs? (In general though, yes)

2) Yes, unless you wan't all the sub's electronic equipment to be strewn around your trunk. I suppose you could drill a whole in the wall of the trunk to house the speakers and hide everything else, but it wouldn't be too practical.

3) No, you'll need drivers (read: speakers) for mid-high range frequencies. I can turn all my main drivers and tweeters off and leave the subs on. All you'll hear is a very low rumble, no sound or voices.

KnightBreed: thanks for the info! From the links, are any of those subs good?

Also, do you know of any websites I could use for further reading?

Thanks again for your time!

Oh about those speakers...

Steer clear from buying off the internet. Its not that you'll get screwed or anything. Its just the fact that you don't know what you are getting. You should only buy what you've listened to first hand.

Go to an authorized dealer and actually listen to some speakers playing music that you like (this is important!). This way you can decide on what size and type of speakers would be optimal for you music preference. Don't let them talk you into a pair of 15" subs if you listen to classical or country.

If you are absolutely stuck on a tight budget, I suppose you could go to BestBuy :shudders: and ask them for some help. Keep in mind this is an investment that will last you a long time. If the car dies you can always strip the stereo out and put it in your new one. Spend some time (and money) and get what you will be happy with.

Edit: Heh, I was typing this as you replied.

Edit2: One more thing, all those speakers you listed came without a box (except the JBL subs, but JBL sucks anyway). That explains the low cost. Keep in mind most quality boxes cost a pretty penny. A pair of good brand new 12" subs may only cost $150, but the box will cost another $100-150.

Edit3: AudioReview is a great place to start.

Edit4: Nefs should take note. I actually edited this post 4 times rather than making 4 separate posts. ;)

OOps, come to think of it, I should probably bump this thread to the top to make sure Relf knows somebody posted in it...

You sure can.

It takes a bit of work though. They aren't just simple boxes. Most have insulation to prevent excessive rattle among other things. Not sure where you'd find a tutorial for such a project, but AudioReview might have something.

Yea don't leave out Infinity! I've got some Infinity Kappa 6x9's in the rear and they are very very awesome. I advise you have an amp if you're going to use the kappa series though, go reference series if you're going to power them off your deck.

I'm not sure if they make the anymore, but Kenwood used to make a 7x10 designed to fit in a 6x9 application. I had a pair, and boy did they kick. It was almost as good as a 10in sub without the hassle or loss of trunk space.

Subwoofer enclosures must be very carefully constructed. The volume of the box must be based on the rating of the actual speaker and much air it displaces. You can still make your box any old size, but there will be certain frequencies where the bass won't respond for junk. So do it the right way. Most good subs will specify the volume you need to create for either a sealed or bandpass box.

I've always been partial to JBL. I have two pairs of 5x7 3-ways in my truck along with a JBL amp driving them.

Hey, go to the forums at www.elitecaraudio.com You can learn some things there. Yes you need a box, unless you buy free-air subs, which I don't recommend. If you are planning on building yourself a box, make sure you look at subs that work best in sealed enclosures. You may have trouble designing a box with ports.

For me, it was a tossup between a JL Audio setup and an Infinity Kappa setup. A local stereo shop ended up giving me a discount for buying an entire Infinity Kappa set (front, rear, and a Kappa 255 amp). I haven't regretted the purchase.

BTW, just noticed that my Amp is heavily discounted on Crutchfield. Retail is 900 and they sell it for 400. I bought mine for $450. Any reason why?

To have good sound make sure to get multispeaker things.. i forgot what they are called. The front ones should have a tweeter, while the 6"x9" rear should have 3 drivers total, low/mid/tweeter. otherwise you get muddy sound(factory sound). If you want to shell out more you can get separate tweeter/woofer setups.

I have 6" 2 way fronts and 6x9 3 way in the back, all infinity reference.

As you can see there are lots of good brands for mid-range to high-end speakers. You should go listen to some different brands to see what you like. I personally like Infinity and am going with all infinity in my new car. Kappa 60.2 components up front, Reference 6953i 6x9's in the rear and a Perfect 10.1 sub.
