I'm looking to replace all four stock speakers in my 88 caprice (sedan body)

I've looked around and found these speakers for the rear 6 by 9 openings:

Infinity Kappa 693.7i
I found these on amazon for $128:) so that made me happy

then it was time to look for my front deck speakers.... they are 4 by 6 speakers and I guess the depth is really shallow:\ I used bestbuy.com and found these speakers that they said would fit:

Pioneer 4 by 6 speakers

I then found them also on amazon for 37 something.

The shipping will be 10 dollars since I'm buying both of the items through the same merchant on amazon.

What do you think? Suggestions?
Do you think the 4 * 6 speakers are good enough? I just picked them since best buy said they would fit....

I'm kind of lost as to what amp I should get though. I want to power the 6*9s with at least 100Ws but I also want to power the front speakers.... could I just power the front speakers with my cd deck since it has 50W a channel right now anyway?

I'm looking into some subs but I'm not sure how big i need....

And last but not least does anyone have any suggestions on an amp? I'm don't know what to get.

Thanks again

I bought speakers twice recently from Techronics

The prices were generally lower than elsewhere and shipping was reasonable. Only problem was some of their speakers were no longer available, but not updated on the site.

Edit: nm, i'm an idiot :D

I would... but you see those don't fit in my front dash. They're too deep. Thats why I picked those 4*6 pioneers because best buy said that they would fit.

Bump? I'm trying to decide on a decent amp that will be able to power those 6*9 110W RMS speakers in the back running at 2 ohms and mabe power a sub... I'm just trying now to decide how much I want to spend on a sub or subs...>_<

Willing to bet that NONE of you can hear the audible differences between a round and oval speaker in a car environment. Especially a car that has no sound dampening additions... Almost anything you buy will be an upgrade to the almost 20 year old stock drivers. Depending on the receiver that you are using, and the watt rating of the speakers you wish to buy, you may or may not need an external amplifier. Depends on the music you listen to and how loud. IF you are just looking for a pleasant listening environment, apply the money you would spend on an amp and find some more effecient drivers to mount in the stock locations. The last thing you want to do is put something together on the cheap... You'd be better off buying fewer components for the same money.

If you do want to go the "amp" route..., i would consider a 4 channel amplifier rated at maybe 40-50 watts RMS per channel. Keep in mind that the reciever that claims 50 watts per channel is probably pumping out somewhere between 17-20 continuously... You should be more concerned in the sound specs of the amp and not just WATTAGE... If you just want a two channel amp, make sure you keep your gain down so that neither stage can over power the other one.

I would reccommend skipping the amp unless you're willing to drop some loot... it will cost a lot more to get the same sound if you use inexpenisive parts..

Thanks for the reply!

Granted the pioneers in the front aren't perfect but I think they'll work. The install depth is really shallow on my caprice and well.... not many speakers will fit there:

as far as the 6 by 9s are concerned I think they arn't cheap....( they sell for 250 a pair on crutchfield and they sound pretty good)

I'm trying to decide if I want to just power those 6*9s and they are 2 ohm so i only need an amp that is rated at 50RMS @ 4ohms per channel

I was looking at this amp but its way over kill... Infinity Reference 7541a 4 channel

I might put two Infinity 10 or 12 in subs in the truck in an enclosed box... rated at 300RMS 1000max I donno though...:\ Probably not right now since I'm going for rims and tires also.

I'd get a nice 4 channel amp and fabricate (or buy) a 6x9 bracket to hold a 6.5in component set of speakers. I would also get a single 10in or 12in subwoofer and just totally disconnect the 4x6 speakers. 4x6 or smaller speakers just sound like crap and their frequency response is horrible. It would be better to have a nice single set of component speakers in the 6x9 holes and just have a subwoofer for the low end.

You could use the 6x9s you have now for midrange, but I wouldn't worry about the 4x6in speakers at all.

Why? So it can color the music coming from reasonably sized speakers you have installed in the rear? You could also look into having kick panels fabricated and throw something like a 5.25in component set down below in front. I'd recommend a 10in sub to go along with that setup. My friend had some 4x6 speakers in his old El Camino and they sounded like rattling tin cans even with an amp on them. Speakers smaller than 5.25in (or maybe really nice 4in components) just don't have enough guts to properly produce the full music spectrum (minus the bass of course). They simply just can't push enough air to keep up with the subwoofer level in a vehicle. They will sound ok at very low volume levels, but when you crank it up at all, expect them to sound like crap. I'd rather 5 nice speakers (sub+components) all behind me producing a balanced musical harmony. All you're going to get with two sets of multiaxial speakers is a blend of passive crossovers that aren't at all balanced with one another at all, which will leave you with a system that has some major frequency crests and valleys that you'll have no control over.

With a component set + single subwoofer you can get an amp, set a reasonable crossover point to separate the bass from the rest of the frequencies, and get to listen to something that isn't a craps shoot of crossover points. The best case scenario is to get custom kick panels made for the front, install a component set up there, get rid of the 6x9s (they'll just overlap with the components and subwoofer), and a subwoofer. Alternatively you could get a matching set of components for the rear fill to compliment (not conflict with) the front components and add a subwoofer to that for a total of 9 speakers. Just my $0.02, but I think you'll be very disappointed with any 4x6 (plate or otherwise) speakers you purchase.

FWIW: I have two sets of 6.5in Boston Acoustics components and a single Boston Acoustics G5 12in subwoofer in my car powered by Rockford Fosgate Punch 200x2 and 240x4 model amps with a Phoenix Gold 32band crossover. This is my third large system and I've seen and heard about every setup under the sun over the years. My 2nd car placed 3rd in sound quality at a local IASCA sanctioned competition (250w and under category) using the components and crossover I'm still using (had different subs then). I'm quite particular about sound quality.

Have you tried overstock.com for your speakers. Shipping is only like $2 for the entire order.

Golgatha, I'm willing to do all this... mabe but I need to figure out how much all this is going to cost me because just replacing the 6 by 9s and the 4 by 6s isn't too expensive.

Do you have any idea as to how much this would run me?

In my 88 Firebird I run a kick ass system :D
Walmart $20 special with 5 1/4 dual speakers with tweeters in a carpeted box and the stock 4x4 front speakers. Sounds great and the bass is to die for ;)

I'm most likely going to go for the 6 by 9 speakers since I'm a Jr in high school and I'm not overly concerned about the speakers not sounding as good as component speakers...

Although if someone would be willing to make a list that shows how much I'd have to dish over to have component type speakers in my car I'd greatly appreciate it!!! Anyone up for the challenge?? Please?
