Car rental for someone under 25?

I must admit it, I?m between the age range of 21-25 and renting a car anywhere is starting to be quite an inconvenience. This weekend I will be visiting Detroit for the auto show and I?ll need a car.

Hertz (among others) want to charge me for extra insurance due to my age somewhere between $30-50/day. I drive a car here with full coverage that would exceed the value of anything they can rent me.. Is there a way for Hertz (or any other car rental agency at DTW) to not charge me the extra fees if I can verify full converge from my existing insurance provider?

My wife worked for a call center that handled calls for most Car rental companies, some do allow those 21+ to rent with valid ID and credit card and security deposit.

They all charge that $25-30 a day. Its the same through out the state, but different states have different "Under 25 fees". There is really no way of getting around it that i've heard. It is not "insurance" per say, it is a surcharge.

It may be cheaper just getting a taxi.

I rent cars from enterprise frequently. Never any problems, but I am over 25.
My daughter who is 24 rented from them over the holidays w/o any problem.

Another vote for Enterprise. I've never had to deal with renting a car under 25, but they have been very good IMO.

BTW, when I priced out rentals - Hertz was ridiculously expensive compared to Enterprise, even after the AAA discount.

I work for Enterprise out here in California, and we rent to people 21+ with no additional fees due to your age. Enterprise will even rent to people 18-20 but ONLY if you're: a) going through and insurance claim and, b) can verify that you have full coverage that transfers to rental vehicles.

To my knowledge most other rental companies won't rent to you unless you're 25+. And I'm pretty sure Enterprise is the only one who will rent to 18-20 year olds who meet the above criteria.

Good luck with it though. 🙂

National will work as well. I've also rented through Hertz plenty of times before. They tried to charge me extra when I was in the New York area but they let it slide.

It depends on the state. See if your employer has a corporate plan with a rental car agency. Corporate plans often cover or heavily discount the under-25 fee.

i rent from enterprise every few months no problem, no extra fees, been doing so for a couple years now (only 24 now)
valid license _ running car insurance is all they asked for
