So, for someone to rent a car, they have to be 21.

Now, does the driver have to be 21? Say someone's mother rents it under her name yet lets her 18 year old son drive.

Driver must be 21.

However, you can just go rent U-haul or something. I think you only have to be 18 for that.

get ready to get royally bitched. as long as you are under 25 you will be hit with a underage surcharge.

i travel frequently for work, whenever i rent a car i always get 'no renters under 25 except those on our "corporate partner list"' or ' 25 or below, theres a 15/day surcharge'. But at least i get a car, and its not like i have to pay for it.

Enterprise is one of them who allows 25/below renters with a 15 dollar surcharge.

im a month away from 25 now and last month i went to florida for work and rented a car, somehow they did forego the surcharge rule. i was glad because that trip was half personal and half business, but i ended up writing off the whole car rental fee because my boss was out so i had his boss sign my expense report :D

Thanks guys. Good feedback.

I ask because several friends of ours are planning a road trip and the driver is 18.

And at the Enterprise website, when you select 18 as your age they say you cannot rent a car.

Why did they have the option then in the first place?

Yep. A lot of places are 25 too. Its because insurance rates drop a lot at 21, and then again at 25.

This reminds me of the jackass skit where they rented a car and took it to the demolition rally.

It depends on the state. NY allows rentals for drivers 18 and over, but drivers under 25 will generally pay an extra surcharge.

If your company has a corporate account with a particular agency, your underage fee will usually be waived or reduced. My company has a corporate account with National, and I only have to pay a $10/day under-25 fee (reduced from $50-60/day).
