Car Radiator + heater Core water cooling?

Aleko

Im a complete noob at water cooling i'v only read a few posts about it. I'v got a Copper Car Radiator and Heater Core from my dads old car he is throwing away. Is it a good idea to use the Car Radiator? I dont mind the size.

Also im thinking of using both. I want to put the radiator a few meters away from the PC and the heater Core on the case and fans only on the Heater Core. Is it a good idea to use both or there is no point in doing this?

What im thinking is because my Car Radiator is at some distance from the PC water will heat in the tubes going to the PC so a heater core at the PC will cool it too.

Will be Cooling CPU, NB and GPU.

Loop: Pump>Car Rad>Heater Core>CPU>NB>GPU>Pump

need to know what kind of heatercore this is.

whats the make of the car, and if possible can you take a picture?

if the tubes are rounded, then i dont recomend it. If the tubes are flat, it might work, however you are going to need to weld some barbs onto it so it can get messy.

In all, i would need pictures for a more accurate assesment.

I cant post pictures because all i have is a cameraphone and no way to transfer the pics to the PC. Thank you vista! The parts are still at my dads anyway and its 10PM

Rad and HC are from a Seat Ronda. The HC pipes are not rounded, they are like the Radiator pipes. Im gonna get the rad flushed, weld fittings... etc

Just wondering if its a good idea to use both? What about presure drop? Also i dont know what pump to use.. what specs. Im thinking of some pond/fountain pump... or something...

what tubing size. Am i limited to 1/2" ID since waterblocks iv seen all have 1/2" fittings?

AigoMorla is the water-cooling guru here; I'm the mad-hatter.

Aigo will tell you I'm all for this sort of thing -- I get satisfaction out of recycling cyber-junk into current usage, and I've been called "nuts" because of an over-eager do-it-yourself attitude.

Listen to AigoMorla, but I can tell you this sort of thing is "feasible." You'll find a lot of articles posted at other web-sites and their forums -- with pictures (circles and arrows on the back of each one . . ) -- where our geek buddies have done this sort of thing successfully.

I'd read those articles first, and carefully. And I'd take a lot of time to think about what you're going to do before you actually do it.

I think Aigo would agree that you need to pay particular attention to hose fittings, water-pump requirements, and making your junk-yard parts and choice of water-cooling gear to fit them as leak-proof as a retail water-cooling kit.

In terms of time, this sort of project will cost you. You may save some money, you may break even -- you may even spend a bit more -- and you might even be able to "best" some of the popular water-cooling kits. And in the end, you should do it because doing it is "fun." Otherwise, there are plenty of decent water-cooling kits available for a price.

as long as the main rad isn't aluminum, it would be more than enough, no need for a heatercore on top of a car rad. Other than that, the heatercore would probably be enough for most computers.

agreed you should just mess with the heatcores, and the 86 chevette one is all copper! theres also some make that makes a perfect dual 120 fan all copper heatercore as well

I like overkill, BigHuge things... and i like doing it myself. Like BonzaiDuck said, its fun

I was also thinking of going Bong and i saw some guy asking if its a good idea to drill a hole in the wall, seal the top of the bong and use a hose to get the moisture out of his room. Im actually considering this now... but think i'll go with the Car Rad.

wrong....

The swiftech MCR220 will own any heatercore on the market, because you need to look at what it was designed for.

The heatercore was ment to run hot coolant though it so air can passthough and give you warm air inside your cabin. They also require a decient high output fan to match the cooling quality of a MCR220.

So please if your going to pass info in this area, make sure your facts are correct.

Now, these heatercores were ment at handling temps in the over 100C ranges. Todays modern radiators for hobbyst are far better because there less restrictive, and also more tuned for the lvl of computer watercooling.

The champ of all computer watercooling radiators will be a thermochill PA series. Not a heatercore.

The OP has a heatercore.... And he is asking if he can use it, Sure you can use it, but your taking a gamble on a used heatercore. Reason is because theres its old, and theres no way to know whats built up inside it.

I would need pictures of this heatercore for a more accurate diagnosis, however, i would still recomend you dropping the 50 dollars and getting a Swiftech MCR320 if budget is tight, and skip the heatercore all together.

Theres a reason why no one uses heatercores anymore.

Have you ever used a heatercore? To be honest the only difference between a heatercore and a PA is that the pa has strait fins. I had a dual 120 heatercore outperform my current setup. (dual mcr220). It is much quieter now, but the temp are the same.

I promise that a heatercore can outperform the other rads. You just have to sacrifice. It will be louder, uglier, and a pita to mount or mount fans to.

Yes i have.

So your going to compare a heatercore with higher CFM fan's to a SWiftech MCR220. Thats basically what your stating right now. Louder? i dont see how it can be louder if your using the same fans, since the only thing that would make noise is the fans.

And if you think the heatercore is still that great, why isnt it more used by xtreme cooling experts on XS forums, as wells as me?

Do you honestly think i care about how something looks? if you look at my rig, im running a RD-30, and do you honestly think i care about noise?

If you want to compare high CFM fans, on a heatercore, then a BlackICE GTX will own the heatercore. Why? because it was more tuned for watercooling, while a heatercore was ment to shove hot air in a cabin.

So yes ive done my research, and people have stopped using heatercores for a while now. The weapon X heatercore, which is probably something admired can only match a thermochill PA series if you use high CFM fans on it. If thats the case, then get a 120x4 BIGTX and drop 8 panflo's at over 100CFM. Lets see a heatercore keep up with that.

So, for convience, and performance factor, im talking about normal people that like to run there fans at 1200rpms - 1800rpms, the heatercore will LOSE to a MCR of the same or near size.

If you want to jump into the 2000-3200rpm class, where a heatercore would actually climb ahead, then id rather get a BLACKICE GTX. or a Thermochill HA series.
