Car question.

For someone that travelles a lot (60000km a year) what is the 'smartest' thing for them to do?

After 5-6years, buy a new car. Or keep the current car and just rebuild the engine?

Holy crap that is a lot of driving. Well, what is the condition of the rest of the car? Electrical system still working? Auto or standard? Hows the tranny/clutch? If everything else is still in good shape, I see no reason to get a new car.

Id say to get a new car after that much drivin... I wouldnt wanna have a car with that many miles on it...

Approximately 37,500 miles. The conversion is 1.6 kilometers to a mile.

That said, it sucks for us Canadians because warenties in the States that are for 10/100K mi...are 10/100K here...so that only 62Kmi!

Well the car is brand new. I'm asking this for a friend. He's had the car only 4 months and already has 20000km on it. It's 2002 Toyota Corrolla 5spd.

I was asking him what he's giong to do when his car has to many miles on it, he said he'd just get the engine rebuilt. I don't know how wise that is though.

he could try and sell it, but everyone that goes to look at it will wonder why the km's are so high.

i have a rule:

if a car needs new tires or has hit 80,000km's... its time to get rid of it.

dont ask me why.

That Corolla will last him till atleast 300K kms...don't worry about it...your friend will get tired of the Corolla before the car gets tired of you.

Damn Corollas refuse to die...they are built like rocks! My friend's 88 Camry with 270K kms is still running strong, shifts are silky smooth, the engine is still quiet when idling/cruising, and the shocks are still fine.

HAHAHAHAHA, if I followed that rule, I would have had to get rid of my y2K prizm at 19k miles.

I'm nearing the 200k mile mark (got 315k kilometers) on my 1986 parisienne and can still peel out with 3 ppl in the car and their stuff in the trunk

If you maintain the engine and change the oil every 3months or 10K you should still be ok. Thw worst thing for an engine is not to change the oil. If the body and interior are still fine why sell it if you don't need to. I drive 60K miles a year and I give the car to my wife after 2 to 3 years and I get a new one and trade hers in. I still havent had to replace an engine yet.

i drive around the same amount of miles a year and after 5 or 6 years you just wear out the vehicle. best to replace it with a newer one. things tend to break or leak after a hundred thousand or so miles. not to say that you can;t drive a vehicle a lot further, i have found through my own that you can;t beat a newer lower mileage auto or truck.

Don't know how picky you are about your cars, but I just got a $1000 car with a new motor, clutch & tires. Only seats 2 & has about 50hp, but gets 50-60mpg highway. Looks like crap, but if you don't care, it's great on the budget.

Buy a CHEAP econobox like a Civic, or Corolla and drive it into the ground, should last 200K miles no prob, I'd get like a 1 year old one, something on like a defaulted loan, that way you don't tkae the instant off the lot hit but it's still got lots of life.
