I have a 5-spd 2000 Maxima and I had a question for you guys... I've been trying to teach my gf how to drive stick and at first she stalled like crazy but I think she got the hang of it. Anyway, she asked me what happens if the car keeps stalling and I couldn't answer her. I know it CAN'T be good, but I don't know exactly what it does to the car.. anyone know?
 
Nothing, really. You could get a little (extremely little) wear on the starter except that your car should just start right back up so it's not a problem. If you kept doing this over the life of the car, things might wear out a little faster, but she'll get the hang of it WAY before then.

You should worry more about the wear on YOU, and your patience (joke).

P.S. Love the car, but don't like the rear styling. Do you? Personal taste, NOT bashing.
 
Actually, I don't like the front but I got used to the back. At first I thought the back was really ugly too, but it's the engine that sold me. 😉
 
JM, I would teach your GF on a older car, since that way by the time she learns, she can't f*ck up your Maxima 😉

 
My dad used to tell me that having someone learn on a clutch is about the same as putting 60,000 miles on it.
I think he was exagerating (or had was still shell-shocked from how badly my sister did), but I don't think 30K is a bad number.

yeah, I would have to agree with these guys and say that the wear is on the clutch, and if she is bad at it, then its big time wear. just make sure she gets her foot all the way off of it, if she ever gets going, that'll burn it up quick too.
 
Bobsteroo just said the answer to your question. It will take ALOT to wear down the clutch but it does wear out the life of it, plus possible the throw out bearing. But its expected from someone just learning to drive a stick shift. It sounds like your good at supporting the wife in learning. Thats GREAT! All i did was yell out my wife when learning in my truck! 🙂 It wouldnt of been so bad but when the truck started to jump from her not releasing the clutch just right she would start laughing her a$$ of which drove me crazy!! 😉



 
It's best not to lett anyone use your vehicle to learn how to drive a stick. I've helped more than a few friends do clutch jobs because they let their girlfriend or someone else "practice" on their vehicles. They are hard to find, but sometimes you can rent a car with a standard transmission. It's much less painful that way.
