does it matter which gear you use when parking a manual trans. car? most people use 1st but is there a reason for it or what?

My car's manual actually says to use Reverse. But I always use 1st anyway. No particular reason. As long as you use your parking brake you're probably ok.

yes, it provides the most engine compression which gives the car the most resistance to rolling.

1st requires the most revolutions of the engine for one revolution of the wheels, so it has more stopping power.

i am not sure, i certainly always use reverse as my park gear when i'm parked facing down a hill ;)

i know in really soft 4WDing you leave the car in gear if you want to stop (using maybe 2nd low), then you simply start it in gear and off you go ;)

1st is usually higher rpm to wheel speed, at least on mine and every other car manual i've looked at :D

I use reverse, but I also lock the car with the parking brake beforehand, so it probably never even touches the gear anyways.

nice knowing all 4 wheels are locked though
