car question: i have a problem, can someone figure it out?

Whenever i go above a certain speed, (around 55), i get this wierd noise, similar to gravel hitting the car. I have no idea what this means, anyone have an idea?

You could have tar or something on your tires that is only flung off above about 55 mph, or you could have something that's vibrating at about that speed. Can't be any more specific though, sorry.

Does it sound like it is coming from the wheel region? Front OR Rear? And can you feel it in the steering wheel or just hear it for the most part?

And is it a FWD or RWD?


COULD be a bad wheel bearing(or HUB). At 55 if you hit the brakes lightly does the sound go away or stay the same until the speed comes down?

in not sure exactly where it's coming from, could be the wheel's but i honestly dont know. it seems like it's coming front of the car. If you hit the brakes, the sound does not go away, it goes away when the speed comes down.

then it is in the rotating mass somewhere. Tire/wheel/axle. One of those is out of whack some how. Could be a bent rim, a loose wheel weight, a bad CV joint, etc.

Your tires, but also check your engine. Do you routinely change your oil/plugs etc? If not, when was the last time? How old is your car? Do you think you could have perhaps damaged the engine some how?

Did you happen to change tires recently or bump into a curb at a funny angle? One of my sister's cars would start to vibrate badly when it got to highway speeds because of poor alignment.

well, about a month back, we took it into the shop, and supposedly they fixed it. and did all the routine things, but i still hear the sound.

I need to go somewhere tommorow, do you think i'd be ok driving it? because i've been avoidin highways all this time but tommorow it's going to be unavoidable. Do you think i'd survive?

exactly. i was thinking bad bearings...until you said it goes away when you slow down.
cheapest thing to do is ask a shop to give you a free estimate..

Take a close look at the tread on the front tires. Are they wearing evenly? Run your hands over them, are there any cups or vallys? If so it is probably an alignment problem.
