car people - Saturn pricing aka "no haggle" - NEW cars

FoBoT

No Lifer
my mother in law doesn't believe Saturn dealerships don't haggle (NEW cars)

she wants my wife to drive to three different dealerships in the area, 200-300 miles round trip to get to them all

http://money.cnn.com/2006/09/19/autos/d...aggle/index.htm?postversion=2006092412

And Saturn-parent General Motors will not allow dealerships under different ownership to locate in the same area, reducing competitive pressure.

Another thing that protects Saturn's no-haggle policy is that its vehicles are clearly differentiated from other GM products. They are so different, in fact, that many Saturn customers aren't even aware it's a GM brand, said Saturn general manager Jill Lajdziak.

For example, if you're shopping for a Chevrolet Equinox SUV, you also have the option of buying a Torrent from a Pontiac dealership. The two crossover SUVs are nearly identical. If you're not particularly attached to that Pontiac grille, you could just go with whichever dealership offers you the better buy.

Most shoppers would be unaware that the Saturn Vue, which looks quite different, is actually built on the same engineering platform as the Equinox and Torrent.

So, if you want a Saturn Vue, you have no choice but to buy from a Saturn dealer. And the deal is set in stone.

i say it is a waste of time, the price is the price with a saturn, and they already have the few incentives laid out, $500 off for whatever and $500 for owning a non-GM car

my wife likes the Vue, i had her looking at the Aura, but coming from a mini-van, she likes the angle of attack of the SUV vs. the sedan
she drove the Hybrid and really liked it

new or used?

new , sorry
i edited

this is for a 2007 Saturn Vue Hybrid Green Line

each dealer in Kansas City only has a few of them , like four vehicles

Worked for Saturn and they do not haggle, its a take it or leave it, used may have the same model car at a different dealership higher or lower but you bring in a lower price and they will tell you to go there and buy it.

But you will be wasting your time thinking you can walk into a staurn dealership and expect to haggle, it is not going to happen.

Yep as funboy said, its true.

Now maybe they will work with you on the trade in and the % terms?

we have no trade in and GM/Saturn has a financing "special" that we might be interested in ( 4.9% for 60 months) , but that is not dealership based, it is from Saturn/GM so it is the same at all three dealers

thanks marlin/funboy

I bought an 07 Vue in October, the price they offered me was the same that was showing up on edmunds.com.

What a golden opportunity to "pwn" your mother-in-law. Take her along for the ride and say "I told ya so." 😛

I am not a fan of Saturn but they may have improved in the past six years. Unfortunately, all Saturn dealerships in KC are owned by Jay Wolfe. I would avoid buying anything by Jay Wolfe. My experiences with three dealerships...Saturn of Blue Springs, the former Saturn of Kansas City (now out by the race track) and Jay Wolfe Dodge in Lee's Summit have all been less than desirable.

Additionally, if you want service done by a dealer, keep in mind that there are only three or four...none very close.

I hate no haggle dealerships. All that means is they have a set profit margin built in and it's usually higher than you can get at the dealerships you can haggle with. We have some no haggle dealerships here and I actually saved almost $1,000 by driving up to Costa Mesa when I bought my Maxima going with a haggle dealership.

I'd never buy a Saturn anyway though.

Maybe you can look at a car buy service through, Costsco, AAA, Carsdirect or Edmunds. You'll get your price without the hassel. I would use the TMV price from edmunds or carsdirect to let you know what you should be paying for the option pacakages. Its dead on for the price and profits the dealers are seeing.

i can understand haggling on used cars but i never understood haggling with new cars?
why is it any different than anything else you would buy new? You don't haggle over the price of that computer at CC. You don't haggle over the price of your cell phone or your watch, so why is a new car any different?

Would you pricematch if CC had the same computer for $100 less than BB?

i see pricematching and haggling as 2 completely different things.

I'd haggle on all of those if I could.

if you're buying an expensive watch why not haggle? expensive TVs CC used to haggle. computers they don't haggle because there's no margin in them. pretty much everything over $100 is haggleable (other than computers and video game consoles).

I would just buy it at BB.

You should wait to purchase the 2008 Vue. It will be all new with 3 engine choices. The GreenLine will reappear as well so no need to be worried about that option.

Wait!

I've haggled an $800 watch down to $500 (both prices before taxes). Haggle whenever you can.

So if I walk into a CC and want to buy an Ipod, they'd let me haggle with them to lower the price? Or if I go to Wal-mart to buy a TV, I can haggle with them? i don't think so.

I can sure try but they won't do it.

i can possibly see a small jewelry store doing this, but not a big chain store.

ipods i don't think there is any margin on, so, the price won't come down much. walmart, probably not, but thats because no one in the store has authority to override prices. but you don't have to purchase from walmart. you could purchase from somewhere else.
