Car Insurance...

Allrite, I'm looking at getting car insurance. I havent had the need for a car until now cause I live in the city but my parents are moving and i'll need a car. Anyway, I was hopeing some of you that live in PA, NJ or maybe Delaware and NY(not NYC) would be able to tell me how much you pay for insurance, whether you have just liability or comprehensive insurace and what year and model car you drive. Thanks a lot. 🙂

I'm 26, have only liability on a '99 civic ex coupe, had 2 points witih one accident almost 5 years ago (i'm up to 4 points now, can't wait for the rapeage), paying about $1000/year in NJ.

This is with esurance. Once my rates get jacked up i'll probably be in the market for another provider..

Man, they really do screw us under 25-year olds. I KNOW if I had any points on my license, I could probably count on doubling that figure. And I drive old cars.

Me: Perfect record, '89 Toyota MR2, liability+$100 comprehensive, no collision, about $600 a year? But it's hard to say for sure, since I have insurance on another vehicle and a motorcycle, as well as a tiny amount of supplemental health coverage. So I get discounts and stuff.

I'm under 25 and pay $2,000/yr for two full coverage cars.

Progressive was the most expensive for me. Call Geico and American Express.....both of them have decent packages that might save you some money.

As for coverage...if you're a good driver and don't take a lot of risks, you can just do Liability only and save a lot. However, you can only do this if you own your car....bank notes require full collision coverage.

There are some companies here that compete with Progressive fairly well. You've already mentioned The Hartford, but Assurance America, Southern General, Infinity, AIG, Mendota (or perhaps Mendakota for you), and Victoria General might give you a better rate. Unfortunately you are only 20 and a single male (as in not married) and all those are factors that increase the base insurance by a ton.

One thing that you can do is negotiate with the insurance company for a higher deductible. Basically, if you have a policy with a $100 deductible, that means that if there's a case where the insurance company has to pay out damages, you're on the hook for only the first $100. Often you can get a lower rate by taking a higher deductible.

The catch is that you are on the hook for up to that deductible. You have to balance your deductibles against your available emergency fund. I don't have much nest egg right now, so I went for lower deductible to protect myself against sudden wreck expenses -- I'm containing my risk at $500. The insurance co. charges more for this than they would if I contained my risk (set my deductible) for $1000.

If you're in school, some carriers will offer discounts for good grades.

But statistically, under-25 male drivers are a bigger risk to insurance companies. Your insurance is more expensive because your demographic tends to show off, drive like idiots, soup up cars to be extra fast, drink and drive, et c. This isn't so much my opinion as the insurance companies'. You're 20 now -- most of your peers are driving like they have something to prove, so the insurance company charges more to cover their risk. I'm afraid that there's nothing to do but suck it up until you get old enough they cut your rate. Mine dropped when I turned 25.

Geico has been high for me in the past, but Progressive is nationwide and was cheap and had good responsiveness to a wreck claim I had to file, as well as hand roadside assistance that saved me a lot of grief once or twice. I no longer have Progressive simply because I bundle my insurance with house coverage, and Progressive does not offer home insurance. I've had some insurance companies lower my rate when I commuted less than 15 miles to work, if that makes a difference in your situation.

What rate you get has a lot to do with what car you drive. Early model beater tends to give you cheap rate. Late model coupe will automatically fetch you a high rate. My record's completely clean, I'm talking about never driven a car clean. 10+ driving experience, 25+ old, single, and progressive charges me $1600 a year for full coverage on a 06 tC.

4 door, 2nd hand, and married equals cheap insurance.

I'm 21 and am with Liberty Mutual and pay $775 a year (minimum everything pretty much - no collision, etc.). Granted I'm insured in Connecticut, but they were by far the cheapest for me.

Cost of repairs, likelyhood of theft, credit, location, how it's stored at night, and about 1,000 other things also play a part.

My wife and I pay ~$1800 a year for full coverage on two cars (03 Civic and 05 TSX) in New Jersey. I'm guessing you'll probably pay more than that unless:
1. You get a really crappy car
2. You only get collision (getting a crappy car is also necessary in this case)
