How much does car insurance cost for a first-time teenage driver (17 years old)? My dad says that it'll cost him $1000 a month for the car I'm going to get, but I don't believe him. It can't possibly that much, could it?

There's just way too many factors to put into that will tell us your premium dude. And $1000 can definately be considered cheap here in NJ.

Are you getting an Aston Martin V10 or something :Q

What is an Aston Martin?

I'm getting my uncle's used 2002 BMW Z4 convertible. He sold it to me for only $15,000

Your 17,$800-1100 a month sounds possible.

Why couldn't you choose a cheaper car like a Neon?

Call allstate and Geico?

How long have you had your license?
Take drivers education. It will help on insurance till you turn 25.

You're innocent until proven guilty here, with insurance.

16 year olds and 60 year olds pay the same rate, until they start getting tickets and smashing into things.

Not with any company I've ever dealt with.

THAT'S BECAUSE HE'S CANADIAN.

Well as far as I can see, that's not accurate in Canada. At least not from the Canadian insurance websites I'm reading...

john, your
6 month GEICO CASUALTY rate is:
$3329.70
You can start your policy for as little as $836.00

for 18 year old good student "B avg.
that has had theire license since May 2004

wont give me quote for 17 year old.

over $550 a month.

$800 would be likely for 17 year old. 🙁

I pay $321 for car insurance

Every 6 months 🙂

For a 2002 Honda Accord SE with full coverage DOUBLE the Oregon state requirements 🙂

Yes $1000/month is quite likely if you are listed as the primary driver, especially if you're getting more than just liability and low deductables. Young drivers tend to be reckless and overconfident.

Depends on the province. Most provinces have private insurance.

Here we have one government run insurance company.

Another thread by pinkeywear .

Um, why in the world would anyone's uncle sell their 17 year old niece a late model BMW? pinkeywear isn't sure of what car she is getting, perhaps you should check more into it before you spend $15k...

Please stop asking WTF everything is and use a search engine!

By the way, the rates sound totally reasonable. You have failed to tell us what kind of coverage that the $1k would cover though. I'll assume full coverage which $1k is pretty cheap for on that car. I've done many insurance quotes and have got varying prices. There are a lot things that the price will depend on, one being the company. For silmilar coverage, I have gotten nearly $6k per 6 months (sounds on par with your rates) to just under a grand every six months (yay that's what I have now). Basically you need to shop around, it will be MUCH CHEAPER to be carried on your parent's policy and most places I have heard of will not give you a quote under 18 anyhow. So start doing some research, find out whatever coverage your parents have now and start using the online quote things or call in the companies to find out their rates for just that coverage then ask to add yourself and your car on.

I paid $2200 a year when I was 19-20. I now pay about $1200 a year and I'm 24. I'm counting down the days...I turn 25 in 2 months.

Go to www.progressive.com and fill out your info. THey will give you a quote. Or get out the phone book and call a couple places. You can get an insurance quote over the phone in like 5 minutes. They all take the same info and their computer just spits back a number...

But as a general rule... Younger person + faster (sports) car = sky high payments.

Uh....

I'm a Canadian (Ontario) And I'm currently paying 5400/year on a 99 Protege 1.6L Standard.

That's not horrible, considering I still have a Failure to remain at the scene of an accident charge on my record...but the demerits are all gone...

After my accident (4 years ago), they wanted 15000/year on a '85 Ranger worth 1000 bucks.
