Car Insurance

Right now, my car payment is about $300/month. My car insurance is $270/month, as a result of a couple speeding tickets and an at-fault accident a few years ago.

I had this thought that I could sell my car and just use the metro for a year or two to pay off some debt, and then buy another car when I can afford it.

However, I though I heard somewhere that not owning any insured car for a significant length of time can make it very hard to get insurance. Is this true?

Any other suggestions? I have already done a defensive driving course, it didn't affect my insurance rate at all. "Stop speeding" is an obvious one, I'll try, but I am looking for other things I can do to reduce my expenses.

Talk to your agent and find out. Every company has their own policies.

After not owning a car for a few years I wouldn't necessarily go back to the same insurance company. However, that does give me someone to ask. Thanks.

I don't think how long have you own any car affects your insurance as much as how long you have been licensed.... at least thats my 2 cents. I'm not in the insurance business - but whenever I have gotten quotes, I don't ever remember being asked, "How many years have you owned a car?"...

Well, you'd have to have minimum liability on the car so I'm not sure what you mean by "not owning any insured car."

I think he means not owning a car at all, thus not carrying any insurance. He is treating his insurance like credit history...

Sorry if my first post wasn't clear.

I'm talking about selling my car and living without any car at all for a year or two, to save money.

So, no, I wouldn't have minimum liability because I wouldn't own a vehicle of any kind.
