I tried to get a quote from State Farm but they seem to require drivers license for insurance. Is anyone aware of a company that will let you get insurance without a drivers license? I'm eligible to get mine in 8 months due to Maryland's 9 month post learners permit policy

You need a license to drive the vehicle without a driver who is an adult.

Insurance can be on a vehicle; however, to determine risk; a company needs to know who the primary driver will be.

How do you intend on driving the vehicle until you have a valid license?

Best bet is to go to a state that has a lower age limit and get a license from there.

Dunno about Maryland, but it's illegal to drive in New York without a valid drivers license. The cop will tow the vehicle and fine you up $1000 and/or jail time. I suggest waiting the 8 mos.

i thought the OP had his permit, not a license.

i would think the car would have to be insured under a primary driver with a full license, but i dont know all the rules/regulations.

call the MVA and find out, OP. there actually are some helpful people there.

In maryland you can have your permit for 18 months while your parents teach you to drive and you go to driving school (required) you must have (i think) 60 hours of approved documented driving hours on the road. This is described in your drivers ed. book you got at the MVA when you got your learners. You do not need insurance to drive a car in maryland with your permit, the car does need to be insured however. If it is your mothers car then she must have insurance on the car. She must also be with you when you are driving it while you only have a permit.

You cannot drive without a licensed driver over the age of 21 in the car with you while you have a permit. Don't try it!

Source,
Me i'm 18 living in maryland and have been driving on my permit for about 2 years now (just got my learner re-done today)

So you *do* need insurance to drive a car in MD though

And I was never planning to drive by myself, I'll have my roomate staying in the passenger side and he's had a license for awhile.

Then the insurance probably needs to name him as the driver. Call your agent and explain the situation. They'll be able to tell you how to do it.

Friend of mines had Geico when he bought his Mustang back in 2001. He only had a permit and paid dearly.

As long as you can legally drive in some fashion, I don't think it matters.

The owner of the car must have insurance on the car. Your roommate will need to be over the age of 21 and have had his license for a continuous 3 years. He must also be in the passenger seat with no other occupants (you can only have you and him in the front so no one sitting on anyone's lap)

Age of the roommate must be 21. (as stated above in more detail)

And if you sneak out and get caught; forget about getting your license and also plan on forfeiting the vehicle.
