I posted this as a reply to the Amex car insurance thread, but it seemed to get lost in the posts...I think this will be a better deal than Amex, and would like to see some comparisons!

We have 3 cars and 3 drivers in our house, so insurance can get pretty expensive....I compared almost EVERY major insurance company, I called ALL the offers they mail you quoting lower rates...I called AMEX, I called GEICO....I called Hartford....I called Traveler's...I called Kemper...I called AAA....I called a BUNCH...

The BEST deal was from AIG...MBNA credit card solicited me, and a quote for 3 cars with full coverage (comp and collision) was $1400/YEAR!! total!

This quote was for 26 year old driver w/no accidents& tickets + parents...that was about $1200 LESS THAN AMERICAN EXPRESS! (they wanted $1300 every six months... and $400 cheaper than the next lowest quote (Hartford AARP discount program, $1800/year for all 3 cars)

To get a free AIG quote, try www.aig.com

I dont know if they offer additional discount through their MBNA affiliation, but if you have a MBNA card you might want to call them and ask....

Isn't AIG also 21st century... the same company that pays below blue book estimates and are incredibly difficult to deal with if you have an incident? That's just my experience though. Granted I paid less than most other places, but the service sucked and I got jacked when my car was stolen. 3000 below blue book. Stingy, but again, that was my experience.

AIG service does indeed suck. They jacked up my rates +$800 a year because my car was damaged by a hit and run and they can't collect from the other driver. No letter from AIG, no explanation, they just stuck me in a higher tier. I would have never reported the accident if I had known I'd be paying three times what the actual cost of the repair would be. Bad customer service.

I have also looked around. I looked at the cheapest companies and most of the ones you mentioned. I got the best deal with American Express. I haven't picked up the insurance as it is 368.00 for six months.
Liability: 250,000/500,000/100,000 Liability: 100,000/300,000/100,000
Unisured Motorist: 250,000/500,000 UIM: 100,000/300,000

quote 368.00 quote: 306.00

21st century
Liablity: 300,000/300,000/100,000 UIM: 300,000/100,000
and $50.00 tow. for
quote $475.00

I have no accidents and I had a stop sign violation back in 1994. My current insurance is 25,000/40,000/25,000 with no comp or collision for 162.00 for six months or $300.00 per year.

I want a higher amount of liability insurance coverage b/c a friend got sued. He now owes a lot of money b/c he had the minimum insurance and caused a collision. I think six cars total and they all sued him. He swerved to avoid hitting a car that cut him off on the freeway. It caused a six car pile-up. The person that cut him off got away clean.

I think I will try Dasher's again, to see if they will beat the price at AMEX.
I have checked Hartford, Geico, 21st century, State Farm, and a couple of no namers in the yellow pages.

damn, for an old azz car as my 86 maxima .... I really want a 1964 Chevy Nova SS or a 1959 Chevy Impala.

Your mileage may vary.

I live in North Carolina, 29 years old, married, no tickets or claims in past three years. AIG's quote was significantly higher than AMEX's or my current State Farm rate.

i wonder if getting the "MBNA cardholders rate" made any difference, or if that was just marketing name... of course it seems all quotes vary drastically....

Have you guys tried esurance.com? I got mine thru them. Their rates are pretty reasonable. I got mine for 20% below what AMEX quoted me. However, I don't know how they would actually deal with claims as I never did one before.

come on guys, please make sure you post your location. Insurance prices may vary depend on where you live.

Me just stay with AAA for better services, I mean, if your insurance doesn't pay up to blue book and they provide almost no services, what is the lower cost for? You would be better off getting oneway insurance right?

In Southern Calif last year, 21st century quoted lower insurance rates than most companies. I knew of countless people, my relatives, friends, co-workers that switched to them and also recommended that I shop there. I almost switched to them too because they quoted me lower by $200 per year vs my mercury insurance, but I let the rate quote lapse.

When it came time for my renewal late last year, I asked for a quote again. Somehow, they jumped up $400 more per year than what I was paying to Mercury! $600 difference over the 6 months. I later found out that the friends, co-workers, and relatives got hit with rate hikes while I stayed constant. Dunno if 21st lowers to get people in then hits them with a rate hike later.

I'm in Southern California, and Mercury is the best period ... they were the first to pay the mandated rebates a while back without protesting too. Other companies like 20th/21st century (one of the worst) sued the California Department of Insurance to keep from paying.

Right now, I'm trying esurance. Their rates are great and the company behind them, Argonaut Insurance, is well rated.

Of course, your mileage may vary.

Take a look at Colonial Penn ( GE ), lowest for me, but as previously stated there are so many variables in auto ins. it may not be best for you.

For those in California, you HAVE to call Wawanessa Insurance. They are the absolute lowest, and they are extremely highly rated. My cousin is in the Navy and even the military insurance (can't remember what it's called) can't beat their rates.

One caveat though is that they only accept low risk drivers (only 1 point on your driving record, which is 3 years I think). Also, they quote on an annual basis, not 6 monthly. They're like the old 20th/21st Century where they take your information down then mail you a quote with different options and costs.

Their number is 800-438-4300. Good luck.

hkyee,

I have a policy with esurance and unfortuanately I needed to file a claim last year. Great service. Because they don't have many physical offices, all I had to do was take it to the autobody shop I wanted, get an estimate, have photos taken and fax it to them. Estimate was approved 3 days later.

In terms of auto insurance, it really varies depending on the type of covereage. Each company has their target customer and they offer better rates to those that fall within. For example, I am young and have pretty much basic coverage. My parents are old, pretty clean driving record, high coverage. Esurance had the best rate for me. Way cheaper than 21st century or Wawanesa but with esurance, my parents premium was almost twice as much as it would have been with 21st century. My parents policu is with Wawanesa, a really small company that targets good drivers who purchase more than the minimum coverage. By the way, my dad use to be an insurance agent.

gobabygo,

Didn't see your post but Wawanesa is great (don't even know if I spelt that right). Nobody has heard of them but they are one of companies that offer the lowest rates. They do not do any marketing and about 85% of new customers are through referrals. But because I had an accident, their rates are really high for me.

I just tried Esurance and I'm getting an AWESOME rate compared to what I did have. I was going through insweb.com and the lowest rate (After they jacked me around and told me it was much lower and I cancelled my other policy) was $2300/yr. I was supposed to get around $900/yr, but they attributed to my San Jose zip code. I'm 24, with an accident and a ticket and a 2000 car. I just got a quote off of Esurance for the same coverage and I'm getting $648/6 mo. That's HALF!!! I'm seriously thinking about switching, how are they on claims? Thanks!!

jawatkin,

Service is really good. I had a claim and everything was processed in like a week. Read my other posts.

I am 21, 2000 Accord Coupe EX-L, 1 ticket, 1 accident (not my fault, someone hit my parked car). 15/30/25 coverage 500 deductible. Premium is currently $555 for six months but that does not reflect the ticket. Esurance said my rate would go up to approxiamately, $690 which is still really good.

I actually switched from 21st century to esurance and no regrets.

I can't believe Esurance quoted me such a LOW rate!!! The rate is about 25% lower than my current insurance, which is the lowest among many others including the AMEX, GEICO, AIG (21st Century) etc. I'm in San Jose, CA

alluu, how long have you been with esurance? Do they pratice those huge rate increases on renewal crap like others?

Do you guys know where to find consumer feedbacks/reviews about insurance companies?

just be careful with mercury. they can take forever to pay a claim and they don't usually cover other people who drive your car (like a relative) that are not specifically names on the policy. I have heard some horror stories. Sometimes the last few percent discount is not worth it.

You want your carrier to be there when you need them, not just one taking payments.

wjones, I just got my renewal through esurance, and they did raise the price, but only by about 40 dollars... I do find that their rates are still lower than any others that I can get. I haven't had any claims with them yet.

I have been with Wawnesa for auto about 9 years. They are very good with low rates i pay $360 a year for full coverage 100/300 on a 2000 Toyota Tundra and $270 a year for a 1994 Toyota Previa full coverage 100/300 $53 a month for both.

wjones,

I have gone through one renewal (so I have been with them almost a year). My second renewal is in July. They didn't raise the rate at all first time around. I expect it to go up a bit cause I had a ticket and non-fault accident this second time but I have been very impressed with esurance. The policy is underwritten by argonaut insurance adn when I checked them out they rated really high in service.

Will get back with you on where to find consumer feedback. Need to check with my dad.
