Car Insurance question

dabuddha

Lifer
Background:
My car was transferred into my name this last May (2003)
I've moved from home to another state and have gotten new plates.

My dad hasn't informed the insurance company about these changes yet and I was wondering if I'm still covered or do I need to let them know. My dad keeps telling me not to worry about it but I prefer knowing for sure. I'd hate to find out that I'm not covered anymore AFTER I get into some wreck

TIA

Oh I definitely agree with you on that 🙂 I just can't get on the phone today from work because my phone's fubared atm and the replacement isn't gonna be here till Friday.

If it's a decent insrance company and something happened, they'd probably still cover you, given that the changes are recent. BUT, you need to tell them or you could get screwed. Is your dad still going to be paying the insurance for you? If so, I'd bet he's procrastinating because the rates are going to go up, assuming you're young of course. (Not to offend, I'm just assuming that based on the OP)

Well I just turned 25 about 4 months ago so it shouldn't be high. I got a quote from Liberty Mutual for $583 for 12 months full coverage so it's not too high. My dad still insists on paying for it even though I told him not to. He paid it without even telling me. I think I'm just going to purchase coverage myself and just tell him to get his check back from the insurance company.

it seems like you should inform ur insurance company of the changes. you dont want hassle in the event of an accident (knock on wood).

It's not adviseable to take a chance.

Take a break, find a payphone or borrow someone's cell phone call your insurance company and ask them.

You have to call your insurance company.. rates are directly related to where you live. And they can very well deny any claim if they find out you are living elsewhere, let alone another state. Withholding information from them gives them every right to cancel your policy as well.

I think I'm just gonna get my own. Geico is giving me a quote of $240/6months for full coverage.

At least I think it's full coverage 😱

Your 6 month GEICO premium is $239.20

Bodily Injury Liability(BI)
$25,000 / $50,000

Property Damage Liability(PD)
$20,000

Medical Payments(MED)
$1,000

Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury
$25,000 / $50,000

Uninsured Motorist Property Damage
$20,000

Comprehensive(COMP)
$200 deductible

Collision(COLL)
$500 deductible

Emergency Road Service(ERS)
NO

Rental Reimbursement(RR)
$25/day, $750 max per claim

Discounts:

Anti-Theft Systems $0.90

Passive Restraint $5.00

Seatbelt User $1.30

Five-year Accident-free Good Driver $29.30

If that quote is for your 'teg I wouldn't be complaining. I'd love to have insurance that cheap. Definitely get the full coverage since your car is hot target.

The coverage is way too low. Only $20k property damage? Better make sure you don't hit anything nicer than a newer Civic...

I didn't notice that. You sir are correct. My friend nearly got screwed when he got into an accident. The damage to the other car was estimated at 14k (totaled). He was only insured $10k property (CA state requirement). He was responsible for $4k. Luckily he worked out a deal and only ended up paying $400 out of pocket. Needless to say he now carries 100k/250k medical and 100k property. I've been carrying 100k/300k and 100k property since I started driving. Its not much more expensive and can really cover your @ss if anything happens.

So what would be the ideal numbers?

I recommend 100/300/100

edit: that's what I carry
