If thats the case, you should be coming out ahead, depending on how much money you get back from the unused premium.

well, they will refund my money, but I'll have to go and immediately buy insurance again, so it's not like I get free money (or assistance in paying for the damage)...

Don't accept their refund until they have paid for your latest claim. Contact the states oversight on the insurance company. They can't cancel your policy without notice.

OP is conveniently leading out the details of how he could have not received said notice. But not reading your mail seems the obvious conclusion.

ANYTHING that comes from my insurance company I read cover to cover.

1. If you paid up front and your insurance was cancelled for any reason, the company is obligated to pay you the difference...prorated. They cannot legally make you pay and then not insure you.

2. If you have a policy with the company, it is your responsibility to pay your bill on time. Many companies are virtually paperless and require you to visit their website.

3. When did they tell you that the policy was cancelled? What effective date was it cancelled?

4. Call a lawyer if you need to. Otherwise, pay your bill on time and don't get in accidents and insurance companies will be nice to you.

Why were you driving around with no insurance? Your insurance company should have sent you at least 3 notes on there intention to cancel on their behalf. Are you with a big name insurance company? or are you with some jabronie like CheapFastAuto Insurance?
