car insurance claim question - parked car accident

I was parked in the parking lot of a local bar Friday night. I was there most of the night. When I was leaving i noticed the front left corner of my car had been significantly dented in from someone hitting it. I didn't call the police to file a report because I had been drinking and didn't think it smart to involve the police. I figured if i need to get a report at a later time I could just go to a busy parking lot and call it in. I have a 2010 toyota only a year old. I have Geico.

Basically will my insurance cover this? Does it depend what coverage I have? Is it worth my time to file a claim/will my insurance go up? To file a claim do I need a police report? I have never filed a claim before and have a clean driving record. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

So what I get from this is you didn't file a police report because you were drinking an amount of alcohol that most likely exceeded the legal limit to keep you from driving and yet you chose to drive that night :l

No a friend drove me home but I didn't want to deal with the police and have them somehow for some reason arrest me with intent to drive or something.

Well here in the UK it would be insane to file a claim as they will claim it back off you next year anyway in the premium hike as they are all corrupt MOFO's. Anyway that aside I would get it estimated at a garage and then find out using false details on an insurance comparison site what it will cost you next year if you did claim.

Then make a decision if the claim is worth it and if so phone the insurance company telling them you have been hit and ask them if you need to report it to the police.

Oh and make sure there is no CCTV in the carpark or local area you choose to say it happened in (just in case)

I seriously doubt you need any police report.
Just call your agent and tell them your car was hit in a parking lot. You have proof, as the car is damaged.

Do not, I repeat, Do not try any funny business with going somewhere else.

I'm pretty sure their actuary tables are fairly dispassionate about this sort of thing.

I believe your uninsured/under-insured coverage would take care of this type of claim. For some reason I'm thinking that filing an uninsured claim does not affect your rates, but I could be wrong. Call your agent, mine is pretty honest about what will and won't affect my rates.

Depending on where you live, that is not the case. Under/uninsured is only for Bodily injury, not property. Your collision coverage would cover hit and run accidents

Not necessarily.

For my coverage to cover hit and runs I need to carry uninsured / underinsured. I live in a not-at-fault state so that has an affect.

My car got trashed in a hit and run while parked. The insurance company wanted a police report. I suppose it's because the damage was so severe ($5.5K). I filled one out so I was good. Not sure what would happen though if you didn't have one.

My car was parked and hit overnight. I filed a claim with my insurance company and they took care of things. Since I was not at fault obviously, my premium did not rise. Hope that helps. If you are at-fault, then your premium will rise. This is considered part of the collision insurance.
