New rotors/drums, new brake pads, re-alignment. That's it. I've had the car about 4 years now.
Aren't as horrible as people make them out to be.
'98 Cavvy 2.2L w/106k miles - new front rotors, brake pads all around, plastic wheel covers, water pump and battery (old one was fine, just preferred a newer one for better midwest winter starting). For good measure, did a transmission + coolant flush as well as changed the plug wires and plugs (E3.54s) when I first got it.

Runs fine and looks quite good (with illegal front window tints), hits the speed governor (105mph) without problems 😛

Well to be honest, the engine and transmission are original, with 300k on them.

But I had to replace the seals on both, and most of the supporting equipment 😉

edit: and it's still worth it!
I want to upgrade to a 10 year old car though. 😀

Gillbot, mod-related stuff might not count 😉

But let me guess... power window motors is one of the things right? 😛

I've replaced shocks, brakes (rotors+pads), windshield, fender, headlights, rear axle bearings, driver window motor, outer tie rod ends, LCA bushings, and my engine. Buying an abused car is a BAD idea. Not doing that again.

I'm talking my beginning driver history alone!

I am pure torcher on cars. If they last me a year, they'll last anyone else a lifetime.

Torcher: One who gives light with a torch, or as if with a torch.

1993 Corolla I've owned for 12 years

things that wore out/failed: alternator, starter, oil pressure sender (leak), struts (creaky), brake caliper (froze up), tires, drive shafts, exhaust manifold (crack), flex pipe, catalytic converter (rust), valve cover seal, fuel/brake lines (rust), windshield (crack+rust), headliner, paint job (10 yrs old), instrument panel (bad speedometer), thermostat, distributor cap + plug wires, battery, speakers (worn out when I bought the car 4 years old)

stuff someone broke/preventative/cosmetic parts: antenna (bent), headlights, turn signal, horn (upgrade), fuel filter, fuel pump, timing belt, water pump, oil pan (stripped by Midas), driver-door handle: inside & outside, hood, bumper, speed sensor (unneeded), suspension coil springs, spring isolator pads, bump stops, end links, brake pads/rotors, PCV valve, wheel covers

'92 saturn sl: cracked head
'88 subaru gl: needed new carb, fuel filter
'90 honda accord: needed new axle, starter, tie rods
'01 audi a4: needed a coilpack, axle and tie rod

97 Cavalier: Bought from family at 185k miles, now at 207k miles after a year.
Work done: replaced 4 tires, 4 struts, AC compressor, rear wheel cylinders (drum brakes), new front brake pads, fuel pump, fuel filter
Sure, some of that was preventative, but what can you expect for a car with that many miles? It could last another 100k easy. Prior to my purchasing it, the only major problem was a broken valve spring, which was replaced and had the engine head reworked.

87 Caprice: mileage unknown, but over 200k
Work done by me: alternator (bulk beef size) replaced, battery replaced, power window motor replaced, fuel pump replaced, power booster/master cylinder replaced, spark plugs/wires replaced, gps tracking/alarm unit installed, starter replaced, windshield wiper motor replaced...
Work done by prev owner: Transmission rebuilt twice, carb rebuilt, weatherstripping replaced, springs/shocks replaced, new paint job (which has since faded), cat converter removed, new muffler installed, new tires, carpet/upholstry replaced, winshield wiper motor replaced

Both still run like champs....

History/Problems:
'93 Toyota Corolla Wagon x.xl - 1.5 year: None ...absolutely loved this car...until it was totaled in a crash
'86 Ford Crown Vic 5.0L - One summer: No problems...used it until I got a new car after the Corolla was totaled
'93 Ford Taurus 3.8L - 1.5 year - Absolute disaster...head gaskets...transmission...electrical...the PAINT was fantastic though.
'92 Toyota Camry 3.0L - 4 years - Nothing but normal wear and tear...did have an axle issue...but that was completely my fault...apparently thought I was James Bond.
'02 GMC Yukon 5.3L - 1 year - One minute problem with steering handled by warranty, everything else was fantastic.
'99 Mazda Millennia S 2.3L - 3 years - One Coil pack, thermostat
'05 Toyota Tacoma 4.0L - almost 5 years - Absolutely perfect.

CLK v8 @ 60K: New MAF and replaced cat under warranty

A4 v6 @90K: New transmission, control arms, CV joints, starter (the only unexpected thing), wheel bearing

The fuck? Why would one expect to have to replace a tranny with less than 100k on the clock? Sounds brutal, even if you can do it yourself, that is $$.

I think I paid $450 shipped for the trans and did the work myself. I bought the car wrecked anyway and the 2nd gear was messed up... till it blew completely.

Ah, makes a lot more sense, major props on finding a steal on the tranny and doing it yourself

Fine. There's been a couple threads about this so I'll post why my 2006 Pontiac Pursuit GT is a piece of shit. A lot of these issues are fairly small, but basically all of them involved having the car at the dealer at least 1 full day, and at least 2 full days if it involved ordering parts. Many of the issues the dealer kept blowing me off with "could not replicate" so I'd have to go back because I'm stubborn about getting my shit fixed. I have no idea how many days my car has been at the dealer, maybe 25-30 days total. The brakes alone took 5 days worth of no car dealer days. Loved it.

1) Steering column clunk at low speeds. Known issue, there is a TSB for this. Repaired, but they screwed up the first time so the steering wheel was off centre. Very annoying, also fixed under warranty.

2) Driver side sunvisor fell off. Fixed under warranty.

3) The turning signals fail to disengage themselves after turning. Fixed under warranty.

4) Insane brake squeal in cold temperatures. Rear brake pads replaced after 4 dealer visits complaining about the same thing. They still squeal, but it's not nearly as bad. I just ignore it now, because it's clearly unfixable.

5) 'All Season' Pirelli tires that came with the car cannot be used in the winter. I could not believe how little traction I got with them, it was ridiculous. Replaced for $1100 of my own money. Not a problem with the car, but fuck these tires were bad! I've driven in the winter on _BALD_ tires and they had better traction.

6) Loose plastic panels in the backseat means if someone rests their arm on the 'armrests' back there they rattle, squeak and you can feel them moving around. Dealer said it's a known issue from GM and there's no fix.

7) Passenger side door was assembled poorly and would get 'caught' against the body of the car resulting in a loud popping noise everytime it was opened or closed. Fixed by dealer, now broken and happening again most times I open the door.

8) The plastic trim by the deadman pedal sticks out so when you get out of the car you can catch your foot on the plastic and break the plastic off. Unfixable... just poor design.

9) Seek button on the steering wheel audio controls not working. Took three visits to fix this one-- First time they couldn't replicate it, second time they did, third time to install the new parts.

10) Fuel Injectors fail often on these cars. I had a CEL and pulled the code, sure enough it's the fuel injectors. I print off the TSB, and goto the dealer and they try their best to refuse to fix it under my powertrain warranty. Dicks... so I threw the TSB in their faces and they fixed it.

11) Passenger door rattle all year round. Unable to replicate.

12) Suspension noise. Both front and back in cold weather make ridiculous amounts of squeaking, bouncing and other horrible noises you should NEVER hear with suspension. Dealer says unfixable. It sounds like a dying cat being raped all winter long, it's fucking intolerable.

13) Front grille falls off at random. The plastic clips are poorly constructed and do not clip properly. Dealer won't replace, just clips it back on after it falls off. (The dealer put it back on once, twice I have)

14) Clutch used to get stuck in the pressed position. seemed to fix itself.

15) Hard to start. When started, the car will go to 500rpm, shudder sputter and shake for about 3-4 seconds, then kick up to 1500rpm. Unable to replicate at the dealer several times. This might be related to the faulty fuel injectors, because it hasn't happened since they were replaced over 2 years after this started.

16) Extensive winter rattles, the whole car sounds like an earthquake. Horrible sunroof groaning and squeaking noises in the winter. Unfixable... just cheap parts. My old '88 Corsica and '91 Beretta had nary a rattle compared to this.

17) Not a broken part, but the car was $23k CAD new and I'd be lucky to get $6k at the dealer now... it's only 3 years old.

After the extensive dealer visits, I'm 200% confident GM lost a shit load of money on me and I'm very happy about that. They sure wasted countless hours of my time with this piece of shit.

I posted this on a GM forum complaining how my car is a lemon... and the GM fanboy guy said: "in my opionion you didnt get a lemon, you got a GM" lol. Couldn't have said it better myself. My car isn't a lemon, it's par for the course for the privilege in spending $23,000 on a GM! I'm lucky!

Beyond problems... it's just an all out crappy car. Bad seating position, cheap steering wheel, really uncomfortable on the highway due to rock hard arm rests, etc.

90 Pontaic 6000 - replace gas tank, repaired fuel lines coming from tank to the fuel filter, replace front brake lines, replace water pump
99 GMC Sonoma - water pump leaked, transmission cooling lines were replace due to a weak, fuel pump went out
2004 Pontiac Grand AM - replace right front wheel bearing
