Car got towed from apartment parking, who is at fault?

In my apt in college we got a 4 week notice of shit happening, plus they stapled a notice to the front of each carport on a piece of neon yellow paper + put these on your front door + put them up all over the complex. If you still hadn't moved your car by then they just towed it to another portion of the parking lot and charged you a tow fee ($50 I think)

I have never heard of someone depositing rent via online banking. How does that even work? Maybe if they happen to be with the same bank as you, but with most banks you can't transfer money between different banks online.

I knew America has an insanely primitive banking system but I doubted myself when people denied it in another thread. No one here uses cheques any more - I don't think I know anyone who has had a cheque book in the last 10 years. Everything is done online - the banks all used a standardised system which allows easy, fast and safe transfers between them. Hardly anyone even carries much cash - it's just not necessary. Our equivilent of eBay (Trademe) revolves around our banking system - no stupid Paypal crap because bank transfers are cheap (no fees in 99.99% of cases) and fast.

I deal with a lot of landlords in my job - I've never, EVER seen a landlord here who gets paid with cheques, and I doubt any of my clients would accept a cheque any more than they would accept a napkin that says "I promise I'll pay you in a week". With every landlord I deal with, and every landlord I've ever had/seen/met, rent is paid by straight bank transfer - usually automatically debited, but that's up to the tenant.

Online bank transfer of my rent would be awesome. I have to go to the damn grocery store and get a money order because my apartment complex wont take personal checks.

Online billpay?

I get free cashier's checks now that I have some type of account at wells fargo since I have my mortgage through them. Only time I've needed cashier's check was to buy my house though...

Every bank I have been with in the last several years has had online bill pay where you can specify who to pay, how much and on what date. The bank will cut a certified check to the party and have it delivered on or by the date specified and electronically if they can - most banks have a very large list of companies they do business with. None of this is dependent on the receiver having some kind of "online" payment system. I don't use my bank's bill pay because ALL my major bills including my mortgage payment can be done online by that party's online payment system.

Mike, in the US with current banking systems ALL checks are routed as electronic transactions. Paper checks simply allow a person to make a face to face transaction with another person without being at a computer, in a bank or at a retailer. When that person deposits the check or a retailer takes the check the transaction is processed electronically. About 95% of all check processing in the US is done by the same company, it starts with an F and is done the same day the check is written, so it's just as fast an electronic transaction because all transactions for that day are done at the same time in the evening.

Seeing as there are fewer than five million people living in kiwi land it isn't surprising that your banking system has so few options. Talk about primitive.

That doesn't strike you as a little ham-handed? Why not just eliminate the paper all together and use a 100% electronic system like we do here?

WTF are you talking about? I can order a cheque book if I wanted to, but why would I? Cehques are still available, but basically only the elderly use them. BTW cheques here are processed in exactly the same way here - but it's still extra paper so WTF is the point?

A person here isn't required to use paper checks at all and can do all of their banking electronically should they wish to, I don't know of any banks that don't offer online bill pay services. Some people like checks for face to face transactions between private parties.

We get it Gaynor. NZ is completely and totally awesome in every way. Jeebus, it's almost as though you bring it up in every thread.

I'd forgotten that you could use Wells Fargo to transfer between banks. My landlord lives downstairs in my duplex but that will make it even easier!

He'll be really angry to learn that the banking systems used in his country were designed and created by Americans working for American companies. They're so great because we made them.

I figured.

I was also supposed to drive over to their offices today to drop off my rent check, which I cannot do anymore. So now my rent will be facing a $100 late fee + $10 for each day. I'm trying to get them to at least agree to not charge me a late fee, but I don't think its going to work.

All my landlords in the past were great, but once I moved into a heavy dense college area I have had nothing but bad experiences.

You are absolutely correct, that doesn't serve as notice. Go to your school lawyer (most schools keep legal counsel for cheap or free for students) and have them write up a letter. When the complex sees a letter from a lawyer they'll cave.

Not enough advance notice. How did they know you were even in town?

Great point.

WTF does it matter who made the system? Should a Chinese citizen feel superior to an American because he built your ipod? Anyway, I'm pretty sure Australians designed and built our banking systems.

I left the Campus Legal Services out of my first reply. Check into that and see if your school offers it. My roomie and I had to use that 3 years ago to get our landlord to fix the bathroom ceiling which had cracked from a leaking drain pipe and flooding our bathroom. (Hah, they fixed the pipe too)

Suddenly it doesn't matter because it was made by Americans. You're a trip kid, entertaining though. :awe:

This is how my new renter has promised to pay me, we will see how it works out.

And $100 late fee? Holy crap, I had no idea people had rent late fees like that.

what does "parking fd" mean?
Maybe he meant f'd or fucked?

In any case, I think they'll cave pretty quickly if you act like you'll get a lawyer. They know they messed up, they're just trying to brush it under the rug. I had this happen before in my complex and we got quite a few notices and they even coned off the parking lot the day before while there were a few cars left. You had to move the cone to leave and then know to park down the street when you came back. It was a pretty shitty apartment complex too, but the company owned a few properties in town. They also had online rent pay.

I wouldn't try anything with the rent check though. You could create a lot more hassle if you paid them less or a few days late. Get a friend to drive you to the office or take the bus. Or, just get the car out now as that bill may start to rack up if they charge a daily storage fee.

This is at least the third time I've seen a conversation about New Zealand not using checks.

It used to say something else. I doubled clicked the thread in the OT forum and instead of taking me into the thread, the thread title became editable. I assumed it was just some glitch.

Edit: I fixed it back.

Apparently it's a feature, and I discovered it the exact same way. Tried to enter a thread I made, and oops... the thread title got edited something odd.

I guess it's a feature for thread-creators to edit the thread title on the fly?
