Car engine noises

What is exactly making the noise when a motor strains?

Say you're driving up a steep hill at 25 m/h and you're in fourth gear and goose the gas. Instead of it moving it just sputters and sounds really bad like it's grinding beans!

I know switching to a lower gear is what you're SUPPOSED to do but I'm curious as to what makes that noise?

We went on a little trip in a not so safe vehicle in Belize and all of took turns at the wheel. :Q

It was a blast and we didn't kill ourselves but we probably ran over a few lizards. :(

sounds like detonation knock ...

either happens when a sensor is bummed, or bad/low octane gas is being burned .. (as far as I've had experience with)

That is the motor not moving a fast enough speed to handle the increased fuel and air coming into the cylinders. When the mixture fires the piston barely moves and it is hard on the engine.

I've wondered that myself. My Ranger does that some, and it gets quite a bit worse when the A/C is on.

Ive tried higher octane, but no luck. :(

Well yes it sounds like knocking if really bad but just a little strain and it makes a deeper noise.

A lot of noises were coming from that jeep and I'd say most of them bad.

I think this one was actually slapping pistons. :Q

It was literally making noises like you hear in the movies when the car leaves a trail of parts. :p

QFT :p

The 3.0 V6 is puny, and not efficient at all...
It's been reliable and I got a hell of a deal on it, though! :D
