I do PC repair and have miscalculated a bill before in the customers favor of about $100. When our book keeper brought it to my attention I realized it was my mistake and I was ultimately responsible for it if the customer chose not to pay.

In fact, when I called the customer I was already assuming they'd say tough shit. But I was very polite and apologetic. In my case they had been quoted the original amount owed by me before they ok'ed the work I just wrote up the bill wrong. The customer saw fit to pay and was not upset.

Happy ending for all.

So what will you do if the dealer calls you and said he undercharged you $2000 when you bought your car?

That's a tough one, that is part of doing business, if you make a mistake, you take responsibility.

Around 10 years ago, I had the engine in my truck replaced.... 3 years out of my extended warranty mind you (63K miles) Took it to the dealer that I had been getting all warranty work from and they said "Worst you're lookin at is $3500!" so I said OK. 3 weeks later, they call and tell me it's done and I can come pick it up. I ask for the total and was told $3500. I get there and the service manager says "Ohhh, someone messed up on your paperwork, it's actually $5400." So I say "You've been telling me $3500 for 3 weeks and never wavered, now it's instantly almost $2k more? I don't tihnk so!" He said "Take it or leave it. You can have your truck back when you pay the money." So I proceeded to place a call to a lawyer just to see if they could even do that... the service manager walks over and says "Here, come in my office and we can talk about it." He gives me a choice "Ok, you can pay the full $5400 and stay a loyal customer here OR you can pay $3500 and never come back." I quickly say "Ohhh, you made that decision for me! Who do I pay the $3500 to?"

It sounds like they were not out to screw you and you didn't screw them. You got great service and they got paid. Everyone wins. Sounds like you made the right choice to me.

Some of you people are just to uptight.

No, some of us don't take it in the ass. The guy may have made a mistake, or maybe their $$$ numbers weren't doing so hot so they try and scam $100 from each person in that day.

There is just something about cars and dealing with them that makes people shiesty and complete and total money grubbing whores.

i couldn't have said it better, most places that work on cars do whatever it takes to rake in an extra buck, i woulda told them to f-off.

If something was signed saying its paid and done id tell em to screw off.

But since they technically "did" work, they could just draw up a seperate bill and send it to me.

I just called and paid, as the second posted said, other than that the dealership was great and I'd want to use em again.

Weak. They screwed up and should have to eat it.

Do you think for 1 second that they would have notified you if you had overpaid by $100?

They should have eaten the cost, if it was one in the first place. If you paid, you should have at least asked for something in return, even if it's meeting them half way or a couple free oil changes.

lol, you got rolled.

I thought diagnostic fees are thrown into the cost of the job if you go ahead and do the work with them.

It's a shame that some of you are so angry for no reason. I've been called for overpayment by my insurance agency and my electric company. It can happen. OP did the right thing.

If diag was listed on the invoice as activities performed, I don't think the OP should have to pay for it. If it's listed on the invoice, then it's a service that is provided on the price that was paid.

Besides, $100 isn't a hell of a lot nowadays at a car dealership. It's really only an hour of labour. Hell, an oil change is $70 at my Acura stealership...

As others have said, I've usually seen mechanics/garages waive the diagnostic fee if the work is actually done. In your situation, I would've talked with the person for a bit to see what exactly had happened, if and there'd be any way to discount/completely remove the fee. However, in the end, if I planned on going back to that place in the future, and if they'd been great in all other respects, I would've paid.

Something similar happened to me when I was getting work on my motorcycle done. I brought it in for new tires (~$300), and figured I'd get an oil change as well while it was already in the shop. When they rang up the bill, it came to something like $25...so I kindly reminded the cashier that I'd also gotten two tires put on.

You pay for the undercoating, lot fees, delivery fees and paperwork fees when you buy a car don't you?

Not if you're smart you don't

diag fee is just to read the OBD code? Can't you purchase your own machine for less than $100?
