Well, it's time for my first car...

I saw today a 96 Chrysler New Yorker for about 6 grand...white...automatic with power everything and leather...100k miles...

what do u guys think? the engine sounded rather good and everything. my only concern was the radio and the brakes, but the guys said they would put new brakes on...and the radio i need to change anyways cuz i want a cdplayer in the car

comments? thanks

I would never buy a chrysler product(except a wrangler cause i love them). I've found them to build very crapily. That one also has more miles than my civic and its less than half as old. I would say keep looking, but if you get it checked out by someone you trust, and you still like it, go for it. Buying a used car is always something of a crap-shoot anyway.

From what I hear and from a neighbor's experience you can expect transmission trouble shortly....about a $1000 bill.

If you want a large American sedan go Crown Vic or Marquis...they last forever!

Have you looked at the Blue Book? Never give over trade in for a used car.

$6000 for a bland "gentleman's" car with 100K sounds way overpriced to me. Keep on searching and I'm confident you'll find a lot more interesting cars than a New Yorker for the same price.

For instance, I'm considering selling my car soon for about $6000. It's a 95 Ford Thunderbird SuperCoupe with almost 100k. It's a rare 5-speed complete with all options and has a very rare factory paintjob.

I love the newer Chryslers, but as a general rule, most of the 95-96 Chryslers had a lot of bugs to be worked out. Try searching for a 97 of some sort.

The thunderbirds are real nice. My dad should be selling his 96 4.6l with a measly 270k miles on it pretty soon :).

That is steep. Every 1 year expect 10k miles, not more than 15k max. so, a 96 should not have more than 80k for a good car. I would go foriegn.

No matter what I drive it's still me behind the wheel.

The view out the window is no different from car to car.

That is way overpriced and really high mileage. If you want a high mileage car for under $6k, go for a early 80's Porsche 944 non-turbo. Your insurance will be higher (but not as much as you might think) and the repair costs might be higher (get the records from the previous owner and run a carfax report) but you'll have the time of your life! Oh, and before buying a used car, have a trusted mechanic check it out. I think it's usually around $50 but it will be the best $50 you ever spent on your car.
