Pioneer gets my highest vote. Alpine is also very nice, but I think it'd be out of your range. I've had bad experiences with Kenwoods, so I'd have to say stay away from them.

All Pioneers have the same amplifier, each model up has different features, but from 1600-4600 it's pretty much all the same.

The 4600 is a very good cd player, but with prices from thezeb.com I would order a 6600 for the extra features, for $189 (i think) and free shipping.
