Car cd-player died, how do I remove it?

I have a 94 Subaru legacy and my cd-player is rejecting any cd that is put in it. I would like to get it fixed, but the place I have to take it to charges $40 for removal and $20 for a tech to look at it. I'd be down $60 before I could even get it fixed. If I can pull it out myself, I'd save a portion of money. OR...would I be better off just buying a new one and having it installed?

usually you have to use 2 "keys" which slide in small holes on the faceplate to free the catches holding the player in. you may be able to buy the keys but it's the sort of thing thieves would want for obvious reasons!

What kind of CD player is it ? Is it worth getting repaired ? You can get a decent CD player for like around $200 w/ install.

If you current CD player isnt anything special, I would just buy a new one.

bacillus is right, though...usually there are a couple simple key-type things to pop the thing out, but they may be hard to come by if you didn't install the stereo yourself.

Well i know for a lot of cars, just remove the surround dash and you can unscrew it. if not it's pretty easy to rig up those slide things.
