Car buffs, i need some help

I am thinking about getting a flowmaster or something similar for my truck. It is a 98 chevy 1500 half ton, v-6 4.3 liter. I dont want something that is just booming, but rather a nice low rumble. I checked out a few sites that came up on google, but i dont know enough to tell the difference between the 30 series and 50 series and 70 series. I am looking to spend about $100. I dont want to walk up to the muffler place with out any knowledge and getting suckered into the most expensive one.

Also, a few good sites that have forums about this topic would be nice.

Thanks

i take it your just buying the muffler? i would say it doesn't relaly matter, but the 70 is probably best for your truck and what you want.

I'll second that... Flowmaster also makes some decent exhaust systems for that truck I think. You could try ordering whatever you want online (Jegs, Summit, etc...) and having the local guy do the install (or do it your self they're pretty easy)

there are 3, 2, and 1 chamber flowmasters. 3 is the best for quiet rumble. 2 gets really noisy, and 1 is wicked loud.

3 chamber flowmaster.

You might look at 'Supertrapps,' as they have discs that can be added or subtracted to 'tune' the sound....if I remember they are expensive though...

Flowmaster is great. My dad has a whole exhaust on his 89 chevy. My dad is also a dealer. Let me know if ur interested.

70 series is the most quiet, if you buy a full kit exhaust I know all the V-8 Chevy trucks come with a 70 series.

I wouldn't go with Dynomax. They have packing in these right? You don't want packing. Flowmasters rock. I had 2 2 chamber ones on a 1991 cutlass supreme (don't ask, I mod oldsmobiles including my alero). Loud as hell and on a dyno about 10% gain in HP. Not bad if you ask me.

thanks for the offer amdskip but there is a muffler store here in town that does exceptional work from the people i have talked with.

What is the difference in getting the whole exhaust replaced compared to the muffler using flowmaster as the brand? Price and performace wise, that is.

jegs.com!

dynomax flow better... but flowmaster are for the diehards.

40 series all the way!

the real sound is going to come out of your headers.. if you want awesome sound start there.

depends on what you want. you'd need headers/pipe(s)/muffler(s). and dependin gon the situation they may have to fabricate the pipes/h pipe.. and hang it all.

Probably get some decent headers for around 150, mufflers figure to spend 50-60 per depending on if you want duals...

If you get a kit it will be Mandril Bent, You need some serious machines to do Mandril bending. Plus the whole CAT-Back will be Aluminized so it won't rust out like normal steel.

The kits are easy self install also. the only suggestion I have is buy Stainless Exhaust Bands to replace the Exhaust Clams that not only rust out but they make a bump in the pipe so they are hard to pull off if you ever need to.

thx you guys...I think i will just stick with the muffler for now and research the rest.

Anybody know of any forums specifically for customizing trucks/cars?

If you are taking opinions, I think anything but a nice quiet muffler on a V-6 is a waste of money. It is never going to have a sound that you will like, or since I really cant speak for you, it will never really have a sound I like 🙂
