Car buffs: How do you determine a numbers matching car?

Im going to look at a camaro this weekend. a 1969 SS convertible.

The term numbers matching, i know means everything is still origional like the block trranny etc.

But when determining if a car is numbers matching what do you have to do? Match each stamp to each other? How many stamps are there and where would they be?

I'm doing a google search and finding coding for 1969 camaros. So its a start, but they dont really say how to do it.

If I recall correctly from all the car shows I watch... most collectible classics should come with documentation of some sort to prove their numbers.
Some companies even keep records of their cars like Shelby... I think some Yenkos are like that too.

Not sure if you can call Chevy but you can prolly ask some a local Camaro club or national Camaro club to help you check it's authenticity.

 

Write down the V.I.N. number off the dashboard.
Retrieve the engine block number off the engine.
The last six digits will match if it has the original engine in the vehicle, you can also do the same with the frame numbers.

what else is there to check besides the engine, frame, and tranny? would the tranny match?

dont know how much it can help but corvetteforum.com has a lot of people who deal with old vettes and gm was consistent with numbers back then so someone there may know more on the subject.

Unknown, I have never seen numbers on a tranny before.

frame numbers, engine numbers, and transmission (on some cars the differential has numbers too) need to match the v.i.n.
if you can get it in to the state patrol vehicle inspection station (Washington state) they will check numbers for you. might have to have an appointment, don't remember if they take "walk ins"

You do realise that he is talking about a vehicle that is over 30 years old.

I agree with Roger on this. Check the VIN number to the Engine and Door Panel. If the numbers match you have yourself a nice little frame up project that you can count on bringing good cash if you decide to restore and resell it. If the numbers dont match, then its only worth 5 or 6 grand depending on what condition its in.

the serial number is stamped in the block and tranny
the engine number are on the passenger side front of the block where the head and block meet.
the block has a "pad" there for the engine codes,and serial #
make sure you look under the car,for where the rear springs mount to the body,and the rear shocks
go in to the upper part otf the body,to look for bad rust/rot,

find someone a little familar with first gen camaros/firebirds to go with you,

where is the car located?

On My 1966 Shelby GT 350H I have found and verified the VIN stamping on the following parts:

Engine block
Transmission
Rearend

There may be more but these were the obvious ones I have noticed over the years. The funny thing is the VIN that is stamped in these parts matches the VIN that is in the fender apron BUT UNDER the Shelby VIN tag that has the Shelby specific VIN.....so I know that all those parts were installed by Ford before shipment to Shelby American and original to the car al the way back to the production line in San Jose.
